Local Insights
Shelby city population: 1,180 sits within a region experiencing measured expansion, with a metro area population: 2.5+ million and an annual growth rate of 0.40% annually. That steady, modest growth translates into a consistent need for both maintenance and incremental new construction—think garden overhauls, driveway repairs, and small additions rather than boom-era builds. Local climate and geography shape the choice of bulk materials: 228 sunny days per year and Annual Rainfall: 34.25 inches mean projects must balance good drainage with moisture retention. Hardiness Zone: 8b supports a wide plant palette but also calls for soil amendments and mulches that conserve water through warm, sunny seasons. For homeowners in Shelby, reliable access to quality gravel, dirt, sand, mulch, and other aggregates matters because locally sourced materials perform more predictably in the soils and weather typical of the area.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Pick materials based on the project's purpose, expected traffic, drainage needs, and desired look. For driveways choose materials that compact well and shed water; for planting beds and paths prioritize drainage and finish appearance. Use our material calculator and aggregate quiz to compare options, and contact our team for recommendations based on local conditions.
Shelby experiences freezing winters, seasonal snow, and spring thaw, which can affect settling and frost heave, plus occasional wind and rain that influence erosion and drainage. Choose materials that resist freeze-thaw damage, offer good drainage, and compact well in your soil type. Regional sourcing means texture and color can vary, so account for local geology when planning performance and appearance.
Measure the area in square feet and decide on the required depth in inches, then convert to cubic yards (area × depth ÷ 324). Ton weights vary by material, so use our online calculator for accurate ton and yard estimates and remember our minimum order is 3 tons. If you need help, our team can review your measurements and suggest a safe rounding margin for waste and compaction.
Standard delivery typically requires 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Hello Gravel has a 3-ton minimum order and uses professional dump trucks (usually tri-axle) for deliveries. You can request tailgate spreading at checkout, but drivers perform spreading only at their discretion and it is not guaranteed.
In rural West Nebraska, suppliers commonly source materials from within a regional radius, often 20-40 miles, but the exact delivery radius depends on local supplier availability and road access. Hello Gravel serves Shelby and surrounding zip codes—check your zip code on our site for exact availability and delivery details. Distance affects delivery cost and lead time, so we provide transparent pricing before you confirm.
Late spring through early fall is usually the most reliable window for deliveries and installs because the ground is not frozen and weather is more predictable. Avoid scheduling large deliveries on thawing or very wet days when heavy trucks can rut soft ground. If you need materials in winter, plan extra time and check access and site readiness with our team.
Local rules can include weight limits on rural roads, required permits for large stockpiles or driveway changes, and HOA restrictions on visible materials or work hours. Contact Shelby city or county offices and your HOA before ordering to confirm any permits or restrictions. Our team can also advise on typical local considerations and coordinate with drivers to minimize issues.
Materials reflect local geology and seasonal processing, so color, texture, and gradation can vary from photos or samples. We encourage adding color or texture notes to your order and contacting customer service if you need a closer match. If appearance is critical, ask about viewing local samples or scheduling a small test delivery.
Clear a stable access route and a level drop area free of vehicles, low branches, utility lines, and other obstacles. Mark the preferred drop spot and communicate any access constraints in Order Notes so the driver can plan. Expect a heavy truck on-site, so protect delicate surfaces and remove items that could be damaged during delivery.
Contact our team as soon as possible—changes are easiest to make before an order is dispatched and we will do our best to accommodate requests. If there is an issue with a delivery, notify customer service promptly so we can investigate and work toward a satisfactory resolution. For details on refunds and claims, refer to our customer service and refund policy.
