Local Insights
Saint Paul has a city population of 3,130 and sits within a metro area population of 2.5+ million. With an annual growth rate of 0.40%, development in the area is steady and incremental, which usually means a consistent stream of small-to-medium residential and landscape projects—yard renovations, driveway repairs, and accessory structures—rather than sudden spikes in large-scale construction. The local climate and geography—hardiness zone 8b with 228 sunny days annually and an annual rainfall of 34.25 inches—favor outdoor living but create specific material needs: good drainage solutions to manage seasonal runoff, soil mixes that balance moisture retention with drainage, and durable base materials that resist settling under variable moisture. For homeowners, a reliable supply of locally sourced bulk materials (topsoil, aggregates, sands, and amendment blends) helps projects withstand seasonal cycles and local soil conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Price depends on the material, quantity, and delivery distance from local suppliers. In Saint Paul we use regional pricing, so gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other aggregates can vary; check our online quote tool for an up-to-date estimate. Keep in mind our minimum order is 3 tons and some rural deliveries may include a distance fee. Contact our team or enter your zip code to get a specific price and delivery options.
Customers commonly choose a mix of gravel, sand, dirt, stone and blended topsoil depending on the job: topsoil or screened blends for planting beds, heavier fill for grading, and crushed stone or base mixes for driveways and hardscapes. Local suppliers reflect West Nebraska geology so color and texture can vary. Use our material calculator and quiz to match a product to your project needs.
Our platform requires a minimum order (3 tons) and standard delivery is scheduled for 2+ business days with next-day available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Many areas have free delivery, but remote or low-density locations in tier 3 rural areas sometimes incur a distance or fuel surcharge. The final delivery fee will appear on your instant quote before checkout.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion; you can request it at checkout and the driver will assess safety and feasibility on arrival. We do not guarantee spreading or full site‑prep, and we do not supply heavy equipment for grading. For extensive spreading or compacting, plan to hire a local contractor or rent equipment.
Standard delivery is 2+ business days from order confirmation, and next‑day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Actual timing depends on local supplier and truck availability as well as weather and road conditions. You can choose a preferred delivery date during checkout and we will confirm scheduling details.
Yes. Winter freezes, snow, and muddy spring roads can limit access and require special handling or timing, and suppliers may adjust prices seasonally based on demand and fuel. Some services like tailgate spreading may be unavailable in frozen or unsafe conditions. We recommend scheduling projects early in the building season and checking local road conditions before delivery.
Yes. Enter your zip code and project details on our website to get an instant quote, choose materials, and pick a delivery date. Our material calculator helps estimate quantities and you can also contact our team by phone or text for assistance. Quotes show any delivery fees before you confirm the order.
Weight per cubic yard varies by material type, but a common range for gravel, sand, dirt and stone is roughly 1,200 to 2,800 pounds per cubic yard. Because delivered weight can be heavy, check driveway strength, buried utilities, and municipal limits before delivery. If access is a concern, request that trucks dump on the street or at a safer location and note access instructions in your order notes.
Many suppliers offer volume pricing or regional discounts for larger orders and repeat business, but discounts vary by supplier and region. Use the online checkout for tiered pricing on larger quantities or contact our sales team to discuss repeat-customer arrangements. Pricing details and any available discounts will be shown on your quote.
In most residential cases you do not need a special permit to receive a one‑time delivery, but rules can vary for driveway blockages, street dumping, or long‑term stockpiles. If you plan to block a public street, store material in the public right‑of‑way, or your property is within an HOA, check with Saint Paul city offices, the county, or your HOA for any permits or notification requirements. When in doubt, contact our team and we can help you identify local considerations before delivery.
As a rule of thumb, 1 cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet and will cover about 160 square feet at a 2u0022 depth or about 80 square feet at a 4u0022 depth. For planting beds, 2–4 inches of top dressing is common; for base layers under pavers or driveways you may need 3–6 inches or more. Use our online material calculator for a quick estimate, or contact our team with project dimensions for a personalized recommendation.
Drivers typically follow the delivery instructions you provide and will assess the safest drop point on arrival; common spots are the driveway, the street edge, or a cleared area on your property. Clear the intended area of vehicles, low branches, and obstacles, mark the desired dump location, and let the driver know about any sensitive surfaces. If you have special access issues, add notes to your order and call our team so we can coordinate with the hauler.
