Local Insights
Hershey is a small but active community with a city population of 1,350 and access to a broader metro area of 2.5+ million. That steady 0.40% annual growth points to measured, ongoing demand for home improvement and small-scale construction rather than a boom-and-bust cycle; homeowners can expect gradual increases in renovation and landscaping projects as properties are updated over time. With a hardiness zone of 8b, 228 sunny days per year, and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, local climate favors year-round outdoor work but also requires materials that handle both sun exposure and periodic wet conditions. For homeowners that means choosing dependable bulk supplies—soil blends, topsoils, sands, mulches, and a range of aggregates—that stand up to local moisture, support planting, and simplify grading and drainage tasks across yards and driveways.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners in Hershey typically order a mix of basic aggregates like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for driveways, patios, leveling, and garden beds. Each material group serves different purposes—some add structure and drainage, others provide a finished surface or planting base—so choose based on the function you need. If you are unsure, use our material quiz or contact our team for a recommendation based on your project.
West Nebraska’s freeze-thaw cycles, wind, and generally low precipitation mean drainage and stability are important considerations when choosing materials. Pick materials and gradations that shed water and compact well to resist frost heave, and consider wind-resistant top layers for exposed areas. Regional sourcing also means texture and color can vary, so plan for local material characteristics.
Calculate area (length x width in feet) and desired depth (in inches), convert to cubic yards by multiplying area by depth (in feet) and dividing by 27, then multiply by the material's density (tons per cubic yard) to get tons. Densities vary by material, but as an example a 24' x 24' driveway at 4u0022 depth is about 7.1 cubic yards, which usually equals roughly 8–12 tons depending on the material. Always round up for compaction and waste, and remember our minimum order is 3 tons.
Late spring through early fall is generally the best window for installation in Hershey because ground is easier to compact and deliveries are less likely to be disrupted by frozen or muddy conditions. Avoid scheduling major installs when ground is frozen or immediately after heavy rains to prevent settling and poor compaction. For erosion-control work, plan ahead of the wet season and allow time for vegetation or stabilization measures to establish.
Hello Gravel typically requires a minimum order of 3 tons and offers standard delivery in 2+ business days, with a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Deliveries are made by contracted dump truck fleets (typically tri-axle) and tailgate spreading may be available at the driver’s discretion; it is not guaranteed. Check your zip code at checkout for availability and exact delivery windows.
Delivery radius and fees vary by supplier, but rural areas around Hershey can have longer travel distances that may incur additional fuel or distance charges. Many of our local suppliers include free delivery within a defined range, so enter your zip code to see exact rates and any distance-based fees. If you have an unusual access route or very remote drop location, let our team know so we can confirm availability and pricing.
Choose materials based on permeability, particle size distribution, and compaction needs: more open-graded products improve drainage, while well-graded, angular blends compact better for stabilization. Consider site slope, runoff patterns, and soil type in Hershey when selecting materials, and consult our team for guidance on blends and depths appropriate for your project. Always account for local climate impacts like freeze-thaw and wind when planning erosion-control measures.
Contractors should plan for larger lead times, potential bulk discounts for big orders, and minimums that may apply in rural areas. Provide clear staging and access instructions, confirm delivery windows in advance, and factor in extra time for permits or county road restrictions if applicable. For repeat or large-volume needs, contact our sales team to explore pricing and scheduling options tailored to your projects.
Because we source regionally, materials can vary in color and texture, so the delivered product may differ from photos; this is normal for natural aggregates. If you need to change an order, contact our team as soon as possible—changes are easier before the order is dispatched but not always possible after processing. For issues after delivery, reach out immediately and we will work with you and the supplier to resolve the situation per our policies.
Clear a stable access route, mark the preferred drop location, and remove low-hanging obstacles or overhead lines before delivery day. Make sure the delivery area can support a loaded dump truck and warn the driver of soft ground or tight turns; drivers will assess and may refuse unsafe drops. If you want tailgate spreading, request it at checkout and be prepared that it may not be possible depending on site conditions.
