Local Insights
Hastings is a community with a city population of 22,645 and sits within a larger metro area of 2.5+ million people. Its modest, steady annual growth rate of 0.40% annually points to predictable, incremental demand for housing and infrastructure rather than rapid expansion — meaning homeowners and local contractors can plan projects with a reasonable expectation of material availability. With 228 sunny days per year, 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, and placement in hardiness zone 8b, local conditions favor materials that balance drainage and moisture retention. That climate profile supports a mix of durable base aggregates, well-graded soils for planting beds, and erosion-control supplies that together help create resilient, low-maintenance landscapes and long-lasting hardscapes.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Home and commercial projects in Hastings often use bulk materials for driveways, walkways, drainage beds, patios, landscape beds, and foundation backfill. Contractors and homeowners also order materials for grading, erosion control, and utility trench backfill. These materials are versatile and suit both small DIY jobs and larger construction projects.
Start by describing the job (drainage, surface, base, or fill), the expected traffic, and whether appearance matters. For durability choose denser materials for driveways and base layers; for planting beds and grading choose lighter dirt or sand blends. If you’re unsure, use our material quiz or call our team with project details and zip code 68901 for local recommendations.
Yes. Due to regional sourcing, texture and color of gravel, sand, dirt, and stone will reflect local geology and may perform differently in freeze-thaw cycles common in Nebraska. For frost-prone areas choose materials and compaction methods suited to seasonal freezing, and allow extra drainage when needed. We note regional differences on product pages and can suggest options based on Hastings conditions.
Typical estimates: a 4-inch layer over 100 square feet requires about 1.25 tons, while a 6-inch layer needs roughly 1.9 tons; use these as a starting point for gravel, sand, or crushed stone. For larger grading or fill projects, calculate volume in cubic yards then convert to tons using our online calculator or contact us for help with your zip code. Remember Hello Gravel has a 3-ton minimum order.
Standard delivery is available in 2+ business days, and next-day delivery can be requested for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Deliveries are made by local contracted dump truck fleets (typically tri-axle trucks); you choose your preferred delivery date at checkout. Exact arrival times are not guaranteed, and you will receive confirmation when the order is processed.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion if it can be done safely at the delivery site. You can request spreading at checkout, but this service is not guaranteed and the driver will assess conditions on arrival. For precise spreading needs, plan to have a spreader or crew on site.
Provide clear access details, gate codes, overhead clearance, and a preferred drop location when you place the order. Note any fragile landscaping, septic fields, or underground utilities so the driver can avoid sensitive areas. If access is tight, mention it early so the truck type and delivery plan can be adjusted.
Natural materials vary by region, so color and texture may differ from photos; we note regional sourcing on product pages. If you have concerns, contact Hello Gravel customer service promptly with photos and order details so we can review options under our issue-resolution process. See our refund policy for specifics on returns and credits.
Contact our team as soon as possible; changes are easiest before the order is dispatched and depend on supplier and truck scheduling. We will do our best to accommodate modifications but cannot guarantee changes after processing. For fastest support call 855-241-8884 or text 844-407-3734 and reference your order and zip code (68901).
