Local Insights
Decatur has a population of 610, and with a steady growth rate of 0.40% annually this small community sees consistent demand for home improvements and yard projects that require reliable bulk materials. The local climate—228 sunny days annually, an annual rainfall of 34.25 inches, and USDA hardiness zone 8b—means homeowners and contractors need materials that balance drainage and moisture retention. That translates into demand for a range of aggregates, soils, mulches, and sands that perform during both wet springs and long sunny stretches. Whether updating driveways, building raised beds, or stabilizing slopes, quality regional materials help projects last longer and reduce maintenance in Decatur's specific conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Decatur experiences seasonal freeze-thaw cycles and variable precipitation that can affect compaction, drainage, and settling. Choose materials and installation depths that allow for frost movement and good drainage; for example, select mixes that shed water and compact well. Plan for extra settling in the first year and consider adding a drain layer for areas with poor runoff.
The best window is late spring through early fall when ground is thawed and contractors are available. Avoid major earthwork when the ground is frozen or during heavy spring rains. Order early to secure delivery slots—standard delivery requires 2+ business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST.
Soils in West Nebraska can include silty loams, clay, and gravelly pockets, and many sites have gentle slopes or prairie drainage patterns. Heavier clay soils may need more granular material or added drainage to prevent rutting, while sandy or gravelly sites may require less base. Match material choice to the existing soil and slope to improve stability and drainage.
Start by matching the material's performance to the task: pick more stable, well-graded mixes for load-bearing driveways and looser, finer materials for grading or topsoil needs. Consider drainage, compaction, appearance, and how the material will be spread and maintained. Use Hello Gravel's calculator or contact our team for guidance if you're unsure.
As a rule of thumb, 1 cubic yard covers about 100 square feet at 3 inches depth, and different projects need different depths (landscaping top dress 2-3 inches, driveways 3-6 inches for surface plus more for base). Materials vary in weight, so plan for roughly 1.2–1.6 tons per cubic yard depending on the material. Minimum orders start at 3 tons, so round up to meet that requirement and allow for compaction and waste.
Hello Gravel arranges delivery by local contracted dump truck fleets, typically tri-axle trucks, with standard lead time of 2+ business days and a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST. You will schedule a delivery date at checkout and get confirmation; drivers may perform tailgate spreading at their discretion but it is not guaranteed. Check your zip code (primary zip 68020) for availability and provide clear access instructions to avoid delays.
Delivery costs depend on distance from the supplier, order size (minimum 3 tons), urgency (next-day service has an extra fee), and any difficult offloading conditions. Additional charges can apply for long hauls, small-quantity surcharges, fuel adjustments, or requested services like spreading. Final pricing is shown at checkout so you can review any fees before you pay.
Yes—add delivery notes at checkout to request placement preferences or tailgate spreading, but drivers will assess safety and feasibility on arrival. Tailgate spreading may be offered at the driver's discretion and is never guaranteed, so plan for the possibility of needing a separate spreading crew. Clear access, a level drop area, and photos of the site help drivers prepare.
Permit needs vary by project and location; some towns, townships, or HOAs may require permits for driveways, large grading, or fill. Always call local municipal or county offices and check with utility locating services before delivery or excavation. If your project affects a public right-of-way or requires curb cuts, get permits in advance to avoid fines or delays.
Because we source regionally, color, texture, and gradation can vary; if something looks off, document the issue with photos and contact Hello Gravel customer service promptly. We will work with you and the local supplier to resolve the issue in line with our policies. For order changes, notify us as soon as possible—it's easier to modify orders before dispatch.
