Local Insights
Richland County, with a city population of 11,000 and a broader metro area population of 81,016, is experiencing steady demand for home and commercial projects as the area grows at a 1.52% annual rate. That steady growth—not a boom, but consistent expansion—keeps renovation, infill, and new-build activity stable year over year, so homeowners can expect ongoing need for reliable bulk materials. The local climate and geography shape those needs: with only 12.45 inches of annual rainfall, about 300 sunny days per year, and a hardiness zone of 4b, projects prioritize water-wise landscaping, durable surfaces that resist UV exposure, and drainage solutions that handle intermittent heavy runoff. For most projects here, quality bulk materials (gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone) matter because proper gradation, compaction, and regional sourcing directly affect longevity, drainage performance, and plant survival in Richland County’s conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose materials based on function and site conditions: think drainage, load-bearing, and appearance. In Richland County you should consider how well materials drain and compact, and expect regional color and texture differences for materials like gravel, sand, dirt, stone. Use our material quiz or contact the Hello Gravel team for recommendations tailored to your project size and budget.
Richland County's cold winters and local soil types mean you should favor materials that handle freeze-thaw cycles and shed water well. Poorly draining soils can require a more permeable base or extra grading, while windy or exposed sites may need heavier or coarser materials to resist movement. Regional sourcing can change color and texture, so plan for local variation.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth, then convert to cubic yards using (length x width x depth in feet) / 27. Densities vary by material, so use Hello Gravel's material calculator or contact our team for a tons estimate—we can also account for compaction and waste. For complicated sites, consider ordering a bit extra for coverage and future settling.
Spring through early fall is generally best for deliveries and installation since ground conditions are easier to work with and access is more reliable. Winter deliveries are possible but may face delays, frozen ground, or limited spreading options, while spring thaw can make sites muddy and harder to truck in. Choose a delivery date in checkout and allow extra lead time during peak seasons.
Yes, we serve rural areas in Richland County but delivery depends on local supplier and hauler availability for your zip code. Expect dump-truck delivery (typically tri-axle) with a minimum order of 3 tons, standard delivery requiring 2+ business days and a next-day option if ordered before noon CST for an additional fee. Provide clear directions, lock codes, and a safe drop zone; drivers may refuse unsafe access or obstacles.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion; you can request this service at checkout but it is not guaranteed. Drivers will assess safety and site conditions on arrival and may decline if it risks equipment or property. For full spreading or grading, plan to hire a local contractor.
Delivery costs depend on factors like distance from the supplier, load size, road access, and whether equipment must travel off main roads. Some areas qualify for free delivery while others may have rural surcharges or fees for tight access and long driveway runs. Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible with your order number and changes; it's easiest to modify orders before they are dispatched. We will work with our supplier and hauler to accommodate requests, but changes cannot always be guaranteed once processing or dispatch has started. See the order confirmation for timelines and contact options.
Because materials are regionally sourced, color and texture can vary naturally; photos on the site are examples rather than exact matches. If you are concerned, take pictures of the delivered material and contact customer service promptly so we can review with the supplier and work toward a satisfactory solution. Refer to our policies for details on issue resolution.
Common uses include driveways, parking pads, drainage swales, raised garden beds, erosion control, backfill, and base layers for patios and sheds. Both homeowners and contractors order bulk materials for site grading, resurfacing, and new installations—project size and access will influence the type and amount of material needed. If you are unsure, describe your project to our team and we can suggest appropriate options.
Check county or local city ordinances, HOA rules, and road or bridge weight limits before scheduling a large delivery. You should also locate underground utilities before excavation or spreading and verify whether the hauler can access your property without violating local restrictions. When in doubt, contact local authorities or ask our team for guidance on common local requirements.
Hello Gravel accepts major credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay through a secure checkout, and has a minimum order of 3 tons. Standard delivery requires 2+ business days while next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST with an extra fee. Use our online checkout to choose your preferred delivery date and add order notes for access instructions or spreading requests.
