Local Insights
Craig (city population: 42,800) is in a region whose steady expansion—metro area population: 2.5+ million with a growth rate: 1.90% annually—means homeowners are increasingly taking on landscaping, driveway, and small construction projects. That steady growth translates into ongoing demand for bulk materials for new yards, repairs, and property upgrades. With a climate showing 228 sunny days per year and annual rainfall: 34.25 inches in hardiness zone: 8b, local projects need materials that balance drainage and moisture retention. Homeowners in Craig should think about compaction, erosion control, and plant establishment when choosing dirt, sand, gravel, mulch, or stone. Because regional sourcing influences color, texture, and gradation, choosing suppliers who know local geology helps ensure materials perform well in Craig’s specific conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices vary by material, supplier, and delivery distance, but in West Montana bulk aggregates commonly range from roughly $20 to $80 per ton (or about $25 to $120 per cubic yard) depending on type and finish. Final price for gravel, sand, dirt, and stone depends on local availability, truck fees, and whether you need spreading or special access. Check your zip code (59648) at checkout for exact quotes.
Seasonal weather in West Montana can affect delivery timing and installation. Winter snow and frozen ground may delay or limit truck access, while spring thaw and mud can make staging and spreading harder; plan earlier in the season for landscape installs. Suppliers often add lead time for difficult weather and rural routes, so choose a delivery window with some flexibility.
For Craig's climate, well-draining, angular aggregates are generally better at resisting frost heave and shedding water than fine, cohesive materials. Larger, open-graded stone and compactable base mixes provide stable drainage layers for driveways and paths, while fine materials can be useful for surface finish where drainage is already managed. Local geology affects available options, so test a small area or request a sample before placing a large order.
Local suppliers in the West Montana region commonly serve customers within roughly 30 to 70 miles, but Hello Gravel works with multiple local partners so actual service areas vary. Rural deliveries are possible but may incur additional fees for distance, difficult access, or long haul routes; drivers will assess safe drop locations on arrival. Enter your zip code at checkout to see specific coverage and fees for 59648 and surrounding codes.
Permits are sometimes required for driveway changes, large-scale grading, or alterations to drainage and culverts; regulations can differ between city and county. Contact the local public works or planning office in Craig and Lewis and Clark or related county agencies to confirm requirements before you begin. Hello Gravel can help with delivery logistics but cannot advise on permitting—check local authorities for official guidance.
Typical homeowner projects include small patios and pathways (1 to 4 tons), single-car driveways (20 to 40 tons), and two-car driveways or longer driveways (40 to 80+ tons), though actual needs depend on depth and material density. As a rule of thumb, 1 cubic yard of aggregate often weighs about 1.2 to 1.6 tons depending on the material, so plan quantities using both cubic yards and tons. Use Hello Gravel's material calculator or contact our team for a site-specific estimate.
Hello Gravel primarily supplies and delivers bulk materials; we do not provide installation directly. We can often point you toward local contractors or haulers in the West Montana area who frequently work with our materials, but customers should verify licensing, insurance, and references. For projects that require permits or engineered solutions, hire a licensed contractor familiar with local conditions.
Properties near Craig should plan for snowmelt, seasonal runoff, and slope stability; choose materials and grading that promote good drainage away from foundations and roadways. Common measures include proper base layers, geotextile fabric on slopes, drainage swales or French drains, and settling benches on steeper sites. If erosion is a concern, consult a local contractor or engineer for solutions that comply with local regulations.
Start by identifying load requirements, drainage needs, appearance preferences, and maintenance willingness. For structural bases pick compactable, angular mixes; for surface finish or drainage choose coarser, open-graded materials; for leveling or topsoil use screened dirt blends. Use our aggregate quiz and material calculator, request samples when available, and contact our sales team for guidance tailored to Craig's local conditions.
Standard delivery is typically available in 2 or more business days, with a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST at an extra fee. Deliveries use professional dump truck fleets with a minimum order of 3 tons, and drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion but it is not guaranteed. Pay securely online with major credit cards, PayPal, or Apple Pay, and choose your preferred delivery date during checkout.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible to request order changes; modifications are easier before a truck is dispatched but may not always be possible. Natural materials in West Montana vary by region, so color and texture may differ from photos—add preferences in Order Notes and contact customer service promptly if there are issues. We will work to resolve problems and can direct you to our refund and dispute process if needed.
