Local Insights
Chester (population 1,180) is a compact, steadily growing community where a 1.90% annual growth rate is translating into more home improvement, landscaping, and small-scale construction projects. The larger East Butte, West Montana metro area (population 2.5+ million) shapes regional material availability and labor demand, which affects scheduling and pricing for local jobs. Local climate factors—about 228 sunny days per year, roughly 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, and a hardiness zone of 8b—create a need for materials that strike a balance between sun resistance and moisture management. That combination increases demand for durable base and drainage materials, moisture-retaining soil mixes, and erosion-control products. For homeowners, that means choosing reliable bulk materials for driveways, foundations, planting beds, and grading work so projects last in Chester’s specific conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose materials based on use, drainage, and appearance rather than one “best” option. In Chester’s rural setting, homeowners often pick materials that compact well for driveways and allow drainage for yards; gravel, sand, dirt, and stone each have roles depending on load, finish, and budget. Use our material calculator or contact our team to match a durable option to your specific project and site conditions.
Freeze-thaw and seasonal snow can cause shifting and frost heave if materials and compaction are not appropriate. Opt for well-draining, angular materials and good base preparation to reduce movement, and avoid very fine, non-cohesive fills in frost-prone locations. Regional sourcing means materials reflect local geology, so ask about local mixes that perform well in Chester’s climate.
Calculate volume by multiplying area by depth (in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards; as a rule of thumb, one cubic yard covers about 100 sq ft at a 3-inch depth. Tons per cubic yard vary by material, so use our online material calculator or contact us with your dimensions to get a recommended quantity and conversion. Remember our minimum order is 3 tons, so plan orders accordingly.
Standard delivery is typically 2+ business days, while next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Many areas have free delivery, but rural addresses like those around Chester can incur additional charges depending on distance and truck access; final pricing appears at checkout. We use local contracted dump trucks (typically tri-axle), and delivery details are confirmed after you place an order.
Yes, we deliver to rural Chester locations within our service area, but drivers need safe access to place material. Make sure driveways or delivery sites are wide enough, clear of low-hanging wires or branches, and have stable ground for a dump truck to operate; if access is limited, deliveries may be placed at the safest nearby location. Add special instructions in the Order Notes and check zip code 59522 or nearby served zips during checkout.
Spring through early fall is usually best for landscaping and installation because ground is easier to work and deliveries are less affected by snow and freeze-thaw conditions. Lead times can be longer during planting season or after storms, so schedule deliveries in advance for weekend projects or seasonal peaks. If you need faster service, ask about the next-day option for orders placed before noon CST.
Drivers may be able to perform limited tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed and depends on safety, truck access, and local rules. You can request spreading at checkout and include placement notes, but for consistent spreading results we recommend hiring a local contractor. Prepare the site beforehand to make any spreading or final grading easier and safer.
Contact our team as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel an order; changes are easier before the order is dispatched and are accommodated on a best-effort basis. If there is an issue with your delivery, reach out to customer service and we will work to resolve it; see our refund policy for specifics. Keep in mind that once trucks are en route, modifications may be limited.
Yes, local ordinances, county rules, and HOA guidelines can affect driveway materials, curb cuts, and where you can stockpile bulk materials. Check with Chester city offices, the county, and any HOA before ordering, and mention permit needs in your order notes so we and the hauler can plan around them. When in doubt, call our team for guidance on typical requirements in the area.
