Local Insights
Steens, with a city population of 200,000, is experiencing steady demand for residential and commercial projects as local development keeps pace with a 1.85% annually growth rate. That steady expansion—combined with a broader metro area population of 2.5+ million—means more driveways, patios, foundation work, grading, and landscape upgrades around town. In a hardiness zone of 8b with 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, materials must balance good drainage with moisture retention: homeowners need reliable base layers, well-graded fill, topsoil mixes, mulch, and surface aggregates that resist erosion and compact correctly. Regional sourcing means color and texture vary, so choosing the right bulk materials up front reduces rework and helps projects perform in Steens’ specific climate and growth-driven construction market. Local climate and weather patterns create practical requirements for material performance. Periodic heavy rainfall followed by long sunny spells increases the risk of washouts, settling, and seasonal expansion or contraction; that makes proper compaction, adequate drainage layers, and erosion-control products especially important. For homeowners, this means selecting materials that match site drainage and load needs and ordering enough volume to allow for grading tolerances. Hello Gravel helps by connecting you to local suppliers and haulers who understand Steens conditions, offering online calculators and scheduling so you can pick delivery dates, size orders accurately, and get the right mixes for long-term performance across landscaping and construction projects.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose a material based on traffic, budget, and drainage needs rather than a single product. Gravel, sand, dirt, stone and similar aggregates can all be used for driveways when combined with proper base preparation and drainage. For heavier traffic choose materials that compact well; for better drainage choose coarser, well-draining mixes.
Steens experiences periods of heavy rain that can move fines and cause rutting if materials and drainage are not addressed. Pick materials and installation methods that promote drainage and resist washout, and plan for compaction and periodic maintenance after wet seasons. Regional sourcing means texture and color may vary locally.
Typical projects include driveways and driveway repairs, base for pavers or patios, grading and site fill, erosion control, and landscape beds. Bulk materials are also used for utility trench backfill and temporary access roads. Quantities and preparation differ by project type, so plan the scope before ordering.
Use the simple formula: tons = (area in square feet x depth in inches) / 324 to get a quick estimate. For example, a 1,000 sq ft driveway at 3 inches deep is roughly 9 tons. Always add 5% to 10% for waste and compaction, and contact our team if you want a detailed calculation.
Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons. Delivery cost is set by factors like distance from the supplier, quantity, truck type, access constraints, and any requested services such as spreading. We offer clear pricing at checkout, free delivery in many areas, and next-day delivery for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee.
Many local suppliers and haulers will deliver to unincorporated and rural addresses within our service area, but availability depends on your zip code. Remote deliveries or properties with difficult access may incur additional fees; check your zip at checkout or contact our team to confirm service and any surcharges. We can also advise on safe drop locations for trucks.
Standard delivery is scheduled for 2+ business days, with a next-day option for qualifying orders. Materials arrive by dump truck (typically tri-axle); drivers will place material where safe and legal, and tailgate spreading may be available at the driver's discretion. Make sure the delivery area is accessible and note any obstacles in the Order Notes.
Driveway base work, paver bases, and compaction-sensitive projects usually require grading and compaction to perform well over time. Landscaping beds and small projects may only need spreading. Tailgate spreading is sometimes offered by drivers, but for consistent grading and compaction you should plan to hire a contractor or rent equipment.
Pick materials that match the function: more open, coarse mixes for drainage and denser mixes for erosion resistance near channels. Combine good material selection with proper slope, vegetation, or geotextile fabric to reduce washout. We can help you evaluate local conditions and recommend appropriate options based on your site.
Maintenance frequency depends on material and use: exposed materials typically need periodic regrading and top-ups after heavy rains, and areas with vehicle traffic may require re-compacting or adding material every few years. Organic or fine materials break down faster and need more frequent attention. Regular inspections after storms will help you catch problems early.
Yes. Some counties, townships, or HOAs have rules about driveway permits, curb cuts, culverts, and visible exterior materials. Check with your county office, utility companies, and any HOA or neighborhood covenants before ordering to avoid rework. We can remind you to verify permits but cannot obtain them for you.
Compare durability under traffic, drainage performance, appearance, cost, and maintenance needs to match the material to your project goals. Consider local availability and regional variations in color and texture, then use our material calculator or contact our sales team for guidance. Testing a small sample on-site can also help you decide.
Contact our customer service as soon as possible; changes are easier before the order is dispatched and we will do our best to accommodate requests. If an issue occurs on delivery, document the problem and contact our team so we can work with the supplier and hauler to resolve it. See our refund and issue-resolution information for details on next steps.
