Local Insights
In Starkville (city population 75,000), steady regional growth is driving consistent demand for home improvements, new builds, and outdoor upgrades. At a growth rate of 1.85% annually, homeowners and contractors can expect ongoing construction and landscaping activity rather than a brief boom or a prolonged slowdown. The local climate—hardiness zone 8b with 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall—creates a balance of sun and seasonal moisture that affects material choices. Moderately wet winters and long sunny stretches mean homeowners need bulk materials that manage drainage, resist erosion, and support plantings suited to the climate. That translates into a need for reliable supplies of aggregate, topsoil, sand, mulch, and erosion-control materials for driveways, grading, garden beds, and drainage swales. With a broader metro market of 2.5+ million residents, local suppliers must offer consistent availability and delivery to meet both small DIY orders and larger contractor loads.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose materials based on use, budget, and drainage needs. For most driveways and paths, customers pick materials that compact well and shed water, especially in West Mississippi's wet climate. Consider access and maintenance: some options need periodic top-ups while others are more stable over time. Use our material quiz or contact our team for a recommendation that fits your project and budget.
Start by defining the project's function: drainage, erosion control, a clean surface, or planting beds. Compare materials on drainage, compaction, texture, and appearance, and remember regional sourcing means local color and texture can vary. If you are unsure, use our calculator and speak with our sales team for a tailored suggestion. Always consider long-term maintenance and how the material performs in wet, humid conditions.
We connect you with local suppliers and use dump trucks for delivery, typically tri-axle trucks. Standard delivery takes 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Minimum orders start at 3 tons, and drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion; request this in checkout notes but expect assessment on arrival.
Costs vary based on material type, quantity, delivery distance, site access, and any extra services like spreading. We provide transparent pricing at checkout so you can see delivery fees before you pay. For a more accurate estimate, enter your zip code and material needs on our site or contact our team with project details.
Use our online material calculator for the easiest estimate, which asks for length, width, and depth. As a rule of thumb, 1 cubic yard equals roughly 1.2 to 1.6 tons depending on the material's density, but exact conversion depends on the specific material. If you prefer, send project dimensions to our team and we will help calculate quantities and suggest a small overage for compaction and waste.
Look for materials with good drainage and resistance to washout to handle heavy rain and humidity. Materials that compact and lock together help reduce erosion and rutting in wet conditions. Also consider surface finishes that resist algae and mold in shady, humid areas. Our local suppliers can recommend blends that reflect regional geology and climate performance.
Schedule deliveries during drier periods when possible to make placement and compaction easier and to reduce site damage. Standard delivery lead time is 2+ business days; order early in busy seasons to secure your preferred date. If you need faster service, next-day delivery may be available for an additional fee if ordered before noon CST.
Yes, check with your city or county building department and any homeowners association for rules about surfacing, drainage, and material types. Permits or design guidelines may apply to driveways, retaining walls, and major landscape changes. If you have questions, contact local authorities before ordering so your project meets local requirements.
Contact our team as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel an order; modifications are easier before the order is processed or dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate requests but cannot guarantee changes once a supplier or truck has been assigned. See our site for specific order policies and timelines.
Drivers may provide tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed and depends on site conditions and safety. You can request spreading at checkout, and the driver will assess whether it can be done safely upon arrival. For full installation or precise grading, hire a local contractor experienced with aggregates.
Lighter, more common materials may cost less to haul than heavier or specialty blends due to weight and availability. Delivery costs also increase with distance, difficult access, or if extra services are requested. Installation labor varies by material and project complexity; ask for quotes that separate material, delivery, and installation so you can compare total project cost.
Because materials are regionally sourced, color, texture, and particle shape can vary based on local geology. Photos are a guide, not an exact match, so add color or texture preferences in Order Notes if you have them. If the material looks different than expected, contact customer service and we will work with you and the supplier to find a satisfactory solution.
