Local Insights
Marks is a small but growing community with a population of 1,972, located within a broader metro area of 2.5+ million. A steady growth rate of 1.85% annually signals ongoing demand for both new construction and home-improvement projects — everything from driveway repairs and drainage upgrades to yard renovations and outdoor living spaces. Local climate and geography play a direct role: with 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, homeowners balance regular sun exposure with periods of significant moisture. That combination makes quality bulk materials — well-graded aggregates, reliable topsoil mixes, stabilizing base materials, and durable surface covers — especially important. Contractors and DIYers in Marks increasingly look for materials that resist erosion, promote drainage, and withstand UV and wet-dry cycles, so sourcing the right product and quantity is a practical priority for most projects.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Consider how the surface will be used, drainage needs, and appearance. Materials like gravel, sand, dirt, stone are chosen for different purposes: compaction and load bearing for driveways, drainage for beds and French drains, and surface finish for patios and paths. Use our material quiz or contact the sales team with project details to get a recommendation based on local conditions in Marks.
Common projects include driveways and driveway repairs, grading and site prep, landscape beds and mulch basins, erosion control along banks or ditches, and base layers for patios and pavers. Both DIY homeowners and contractors order materials for temporary fixes and whole-site renovations.
Measure the area (length and width) and decide the required depth in inches, then convert to cubic yards (area in square feet times depth in feet divided by 27). Use Hello Gravel's material calculator or send photos and dimensions to our team for help. Always add 5-10% extra for compaction, settlement, and waste on irregular sites.
Standard delivery requires 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Deliveries are usually by dump truck (often tri-axle); some rural roads, low-clearance drives, narrow gates, or soft ground may limit truck access. Tell us about narrow roads, low-hanging branches, or weight-restricted bridges when you order so we can plan the right truck and route.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but it is not guaranteed. Request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess safety and equipment on arrival; for consistent spreading, consider hiring a local installer. We recommend marking the area and removing obstructions before delivery to improve the chance spreading can be done.
Marks and West Mississippi have relatively high rainfall and generally mild freeze/thaw cycles, so drainage and erosion resistance are important considerations. Choose materials and installation practices that promote good drainage, such as well-graded base layers and permeable surfaces, and avoid materials that compact poorly in wet conditions. Regional sourcing means texture and color will reflect local geology, so expect some variation.
Permit rules can vary depending on whether the work affects a public right-of-way, drainage, or protected waterways. Contact the City of Marks or Quitman County building/road office to confirm local permit or setback requirements before you start. If in doubt, our team can help point you to local authorities to check.
Delivered prices vary by material type, quantity, depth, and exact delivery location, so we display upfront local pricing during checkout. Regional factors and seasonal demand also affect cost. For a tailored estimate, use the Get a Quote tool or enter your zip code to see current prices for your area.
Most local suppliers connected through our platform focus on delivering material; installation is often provided by separate contractors. Warranties and guarantees vary by installer and supplier; delivery typically covers the quantity and basic condition of materials on arrival. Ask your supplier or contractor about installation warranties and check our customer service if you have an issue with delivery.
Provide clear delivery instructions, photos of the driveway and approach, gate dimensions, overhead clearance, and any bridge or road weight limits. Note where you want the material dumped and any sensitive areas to avoid. This helps us choose the right truck, plan the route, and reduce the chance of delays or extra fees.
