Local Insights
De Kalb is a small but growing community (city population 3,170) where steady expansion—reflected in a 1.85% annual growth rate—translates into steady demand for residential upgrades and local infrastructure work. That steady growth means homeowners are increasingly tackling driveway renovations, yard regrading, garden beds, and small additions that all require reliable bulk supplies. The local climate—hardiness zone 8b, about 228 sunny days per year, and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall—creates balanced needs: enough rain to make drainage and erosion control important, plus plenty of sun that supports active landscaping and outdoor hardscape projects. In practice, homeowners in De Kalb often need materials that balance drainage, stability, and aesthetics, from base materials for compacted surfaces to topsoil and mulch for planting. Choosing the right bulk materials up front reduces rework, helps projects withstand local weather, and keeps budgets predictable as the metro area (2.5+ million) continues to develop nearby.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners in De Kalb often choose materials that balance cost, drainage, and appearance. Options include compactable aggregates, loose mixes, and decorative stone; think of gravel, sand, dirt, stone as a group when comparing performance. Consider vehicle weight, desired look, and how much maintenance you want when selecting a material.
De Kalb is in a warm, humid region with seasonal heavy rain, so drainage and erosion resistance are important. Choose materials and installation methods that shed water and resist washout, and consider a compacted base and proper grading. Regional sourcing means color and texture can vary locally, which may affect appearance and performance.
Start by defining the project's needs: load-bearing capacity, drainage, look, and maintenance level. Then narrow materials based on those needs and your budget, using features of gravel, sand, dirt, stone as a group to compare permeability and stability. Use a material calculator or our aggregate quiz to estimate quantities and get guidance.
Typical delivery options include standard delivery (2+ business days) and a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Hello Gravel requires a minimum order of 3 tons and works with local haulers; many areas offer free delivery but fees depend on location and access. Tailgate spreading can be requested at checkout, but it is done at the driver's discretion and not guaranteed.
Permit needs vary by project type and location, so check with the De Kalb city or Kemper County building and planning office before you start. Driveways that alter a public right-of-way, change drainage patterns, or require culverts often need permits or inspections. Also check any neighborhood covenants or HOA rules before choosing materials or changing front-yard layouts.
Spring and fall are often the best times for deliveries and installations because conditions are usually drier and milder. Avoid scheduling major deliveries during heavy summer rains or after prolonged wet periods, which can cause settling, rutting, and slower compaction. If you need next-day delivery, order before noon CST and be prepared for weather-related delays.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth of the area to calculate cubic yards, then convert to tons using typical density estimates or our online calculator. Hello Gravel's material calculator and aggregate quiz can simplify this and give a recommended order size. Always allow a small overage for compaction, settling, and minor measurement errors.
Materials that are looser and finer generally require more frequent upkeep like replenishing, raking, and weed control, while larger, well-compacted aggregates usually need less frequent attention. Consider long-term tasks like regrading, adding material after washouts, and maintaining edging or drainage features. Factor in labor and replacement costs when choosing a material for appearance and durability.
Common issues include poor drainage, erosion, settling, and rutting after heavy rain. Choosing materials and installation methods that promote proper drainage, adequate compaction, and stable edges reduces these problems. Adding a well-prepared base, geotextile fabric where needed, and correct grading are often more important than the specific material.
