Local Insights
Thief River Falls has a population of 11,290 and sits within a steadily growing regional market that includes a metro area population of 2.5+ million. That measured growth — about 0.40% annually — points to steady demand for residential updates and local infrastructure work rather than a construction boom, which means homeowners and small contractors often focus on practical upgrades, repairs, and incremental landscaping projects. With 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, local projects must balance good drainage and erosion control with sun-tolerant surface choices. In this environment, reliable bulk materials—gravel, sand, topsoil, mulch, and stone—support everything from driveway repairs and drainage swales to foundation backfill and low-maintenance yards. Choosing regionally sourced aggregates helps ensure color, texture, and performance match Thief River Falls conditions and reduce delays from long supply chains.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Customers in Thief River Falls commonly order bulk materials like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for driveways, patios, pathways, grading, raised beds, and erosion control. Orders range from small landscaping jobs to larger contractor projects. Because Hello Gravel sources regionally, available sizes and colors reflect local geology.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause shifting, settling, and frost heave if materials or base layers are not chosen and compacted correctly. Good drainage, proper compaction, and using materials suited for freeze-thaw climates help reduce movement. Plan installations for warmer months when possible, and consider installers familiar with local winter conditions.
Hello Gravel requires a 3-ton minimum order and offers standard delivery with a 2+ business day lead time. Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Delivery fees vary by distance and rural access—some areas may qualify for free delivery, so check your zip code at checkout.
Late spring through early fall is generally the best time for delivery and installation, since ground conditions are easier to work with and compaction is more reliable. Fall can work well for surface materials and erosion control if weather permits, but avoid installing base layers on frozen ground. Winter deliveries are possible in some cases but make installation and spreading more difficult.
Yes, suppliers and contracted haulers often deliver to rural addresses and farms in the Thief River Falls area, but remote deliveries may incur additional charges. Drivers need sufficient access, a clear turnaround, and any gate codes or access instructions should be provided at checkout. If access is limited, we recommend contacting our team to confirm feasibility before ordering.
Choose materials based on load, drainage needs, intended use, and desired appearance. For example, projects that carry vehicles need stable, well-compacted material, while decorative areas can prioritize color and texture. Use Hello Gravel's material descriptions and the aggregate quiz or contact our sales team for guidance tailored to your project's requirements.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide on the desired depth, then use Hello Gravel's material calculator to convert volume to tons—density varies by material, so the calculator gives a more accurate estimate. Order a bit extra to account for compaction, grading, and waste, and contact our team if you want a quick estimate or help refining your numbers.
Trucks typically dump material in one location; drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion if it can be done safely. You can request spreading at checkout, but this service is not guaranteed and depends on the driver and site conditions. For precise spreading or fine grading, consider hiring a local contractor to finish the job.
Materials reflect regional sourcing and local geology, so color, texture, and particle shape can vary from images. Natural variations are normal and expected, and photos should be used as a general guide. If color or texture is important, note preferences in Order Notes and contact customer service for additional guidance before placing your order.
