Local Insights
Saint Anthony is a small but active community with a city population of 2,500 and ties to a broader metro area population of 2.5+ million. A growth rate of 0.40% annually points to steady, measured demand for housing maintenance and incremental development rather than rapid boom conditions — that means homeowners often focus on upgrades, repair, and targeted landscaping projects. With 228 sunny days per year and an annual rainfall of 34.25 inches, local projects must balance sun exposure with periodic wet weather. In practical terms, homeowners need a range of bulk materials — from topsoil and dirt for planting beds to sand and gravel for drainage, plus mulches and stone for erosion control and curb appeal. Regional sourcing means material color and texture will reflect local geology, so planning around appearance, drainage, and long-term durability is essential for successful projects.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners typically order a mix of materials such as gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for driveways, base layers, and landscaping. These materials serve different roles — base, drainage, leveling, or finish surface — so many projects use two or more types together. Choose materials based on the project function rather than appearance alone.
Pick materials based on the project need: strong, angular mixes for a compacted base; well-draining mixes for areas prone to water; and smoother, decorative mixes for surface finish. Consider load (foot traffic vs vehicles), slope, and whether you need a stable base under pavers or asphalt. If in doubt, use our material calculator or contact our team for guidance.
Calculate volume in cubic yards using length x width x depth (in feet) divided by 27, then convert to tons if needed (regional conversion varies). For example, a 20 ft by 10 ft area at 4 in depth is about 0.6 cubic yards; a full driveway will need several cubic yards depending on depth. Use the Hello Gravel material calculator for quicker estimates and always order a little extra for compaction and settling.
Prices vary by material type, local supplier, and current market conditions, so exact per-ton or per-yard costs change frequently. Hello Gravel provides transparent quotes based on your zip code and order size; remember our minimum order is 3 tons. Delivery pricing depends on distance, truck access, and whether you request expedited service.
In Saint Anthony, the most reliable window for exterior work is late spring through early fall when the ground is thawed and dryer. Avoid scheduling major base work during spring thaw or when the ground is very wet, as compaction and drainage can be affected. We offer standard delivery in 2+ business days and a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST, but lead times increase in peak season.
Local geology and Minnesota's seasonal wetness mean soils can hold water and shift during freeze-thaw cycles, so choose materials that promote drainage and a stable base. Mixing a well-graded base material under your finish layer helps with compaction and long-term performance. For sites with poor subsoil or high groundwater, consider additional base depth or geotextile separation.
Most deliveries use tri-axle dump trucks, so you need at least 12 to 16 ft of clear width and stable ground to support heavy trucks. Overhead lines, low branches, narrow alleys, tight turns, or soft lawns can require a different drop location or smaller truck and may incur extra fees. Mark your preferred drop spot, clear obstructions, and let us know access concerns when you order.
Drivers may be able to perform limited tailgate spreading at their discretion; you can request this at checkout but it is not guaranteed. For controlled spreading or graded work, plan for a crew or equipment to finish the job after delivery. You or an authorized person should be on site to confirm the drop location and accept delivery.
Yes, local permits and HOA rules can apply to driveway changes, curb cuts, and front-yard grading. Contact the City of Saint Anthony and your HOA before starting work to confirm requirements, setback rules, and stormwater regulations. When in doubt, we recommend checking with local authorities early to avoid delays.
During peak spring and summer months, lead times can be longer than our standard 2+ business days, so schedule as early as possible. For large or time-sensitive projects, book weeks in advance, especially for weekend or specific-date deliveries. Orders placed before noon CST may qualify for next-day delivery for an extra fee, subject to availability.
Clear a stable drop zone, remove vehicles and obstacles, and mark utilities or fragile landscaping with stakes or flags. Make sure the driver will have a safe turnaround or a place to stage without blocking public streets, and note any preferred drop location in your order notes. If you need street or curbside delivery, check local rules and plan for pedestrian safety.
