Local Insights
Richmond's city population is 4,350, set within a larger regional market of 2.5+ million people. That steady backdrop — a growth rate of 0.40% annually — points to modest but continuous demand for home upgrades, maintenance, and small-scale construction. For homeowners, that means more projects that improve property resilience and curb appeal rather than a rapid building boom. Richmond's climate and geography shape material choices: with 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, properties need materials that balance drainage and moisture retention while withstanding long sun exposure. Being in hardiness zone 8b also guides planting and edging choices tied to landscape materials. In this environment, homeowners and contractors turn to a range of bulk supplies—compaction-ready base, drainage-friendly aggregates, soil blends, and protective surfacing—to manage water, stabilize grades, and create low-maintenance outdoor spaces. Quality, regionally sourced materials help projects last longer and perform better under local conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start with the project's purpose: structural base, surface finish, or drainage. Choose from gravel, sand, dirt, stone based on load, drainage and appearance needs, and mention any local frost‑heave concerns. Check that the material compacts well for driveways or permits good drainage for beds and swales. Ask our team for recommendations tailored to your site and local conditions.
Pick materials that match the function: a compactable base material for structural support, and a well‑draining surface layer for runoff areas. Gravel, sand, dirt, stone all perform differently in freeze‑thaw cycles, so favor materials with good drainage and compaction where frost heave is a concern. Local suppliers provide materials selected for West Minnesota soils and climate. If you are unsure, use our aggregate quiz or contact our team for guidance.
Spring thaw and wet conditions can make sites muddy and may trigger local road weight limits, so large deliveries are often easier from late spring through early fall. Winter deliveries are possible but may require cleared access and additional handling due to snow and ice. Plan around major freeze‑thaw periods and check local road restrictions; our team can advise on timing for your zip code.
Standard delivery typically takes 2+ business days, with a next‑day option available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Minimum orders are usually 3 tons, and deliveries are made by contracted dump trucks (commonly tri‑axle). Choose your preferred delivery date at checkout and confirm driveway or drop location details before delivery.
Measure the area and desired depth, then convert to cubic yards or tons; our online material calculator can do this for you. As a rule, double‑check measurements and allow a small overage for compaction and grading. If you need help, send project dimensions to our team and we will provide an estimate.
No, natural variation is normal because materials are regionally sourced, so color, texture, and stone mix will reflect local geology. Photos are illustrative; if color or texture is important, note preferences in Order Notes and discuss options with our team before ordering. We will do our best to match your request but cannot guarantee an exact visual match.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this is not guaranteed and depends on safety, access, and local regulations. You can request spreading during checkout and the driver will assess feasibility upon arrival. For reliable spreading, consider hiring a local labor crew or scheduling professional spreading separately.
Deliveries are typically made by tri‑axle dump trucks requiring clear, level access and sufficient turning space. Identify preferred drop locations and clear obstacles like low branches, parked cars, or narrow gates in advance. If access is tight, contact our team so we can coordinate a suitable drop point or smaller truck options when available.
Contact our customer service as soon as possible; changes are easier before the order is processed and dispatched. We will make a best effort to accommodate modifications, but ability to change or cancel depends on supplier and truck scheduling. See our order policy or call the team for current options and any applicable fees.
Contact customer service promptly with photos and details so we can investigate and work toward a resolution. We coordinate with local suppliers and haulers to address shortages, delivery problems, or quality concerns. Review our refund and issue resolution policies for next steps and timelines.
