Local Insights
North St. Paul, with a population of 12,000, sits inside a larger Minneapolis–St. Paul metro of 2.5+ million, and its steady 0.40% annual growth points to ongoing, measured demand for home improvements and small-scale construction. In practical terms, steady growth means a consistent stream of driveway repairs, landscape refreshes, additions, and grading work rather than sudden booms. The local climate — USDA hardiness zone 8b, about 228 sunny days per year, and 34.32 inches of annual rainfall — drives specific material choices: projects need products that manage moisture, resist seasonal movement, and support plantings across wet and dry periods. Homeowners and contractors in the area favor solutions that emphasize drainage, frost- and settling-resistant bases, and durable surfacing. That combination makes reliable bulk supplies — from sands and gravels to topsoil, mulch, and crushed aggregates — essential for lasting results, especially when materials are sourced and delivered locally to match North St. Paul’s geology and weather patterns.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose a material that compacts well, drains water, and matches the driveway use and budget. In North St. Paul’s climate, many homeowners select materials from the group gravel, sand, dirt, stone that are angular and compactable for a stable surface; softer, fine materials are better as a finishing layer. Talk to suppliers about recommended base and top layers for a long-lasting driveway.
Delivery cost varies with material type, quantity, distance from the supplier, and site access. Many metro-area deliveries are free for larger orders while smaller orders may incur a delivery or next-day fee; Hello Gravel has a 3-ton minimum and offers transparent quotes, so get a price online or by calling for an exact cost estimate. Additional charges can apply for difficult access, permits, or spreading services.
In cold, wet climates like North St. Paul, pick materials that shed water and resist settling to reduce frost heave. Generally, well-draining, angular, compactable products from the gravel, sand, dirt, stone group perform better than fine, organic-rich materials. Proper base preparation and drainage are as important as material choice for freeze-thaw durability.
Spring through fall is the most convenient season for deliveries and placement because the ground is easier to work and trucks have better access. Winter deliveries are possible but can be slower, subject to weather, and may limit spreading or compaction services. Plan ahead and choose a delivery date through the checkout calendar to secure your timing.
Most haulers will place material where the truck can safely access, such as driveways, street-facing drop zones, or front yards, but exact placement depends on site access and driver discretion. If you need material left on the street, check local permit requirements first and note placement instructions in your order. Drivers will assess safety on arrival and may request a different drop location if needed.
Order minimums and fees vary by supplier, but Hello Gravel’s platform commonly requires a 3-ton minimum for orders placed through the site. Delivery fees depend on distance, order size, and timing (standard vs. next-day), and some orders qualify for free delivery; review your quote at checkout for the exact breakdown. Extra charges may apply for tight access, long drops, or permit coordination.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide on the target depth, then convert to cubic feet and to cubic yards (divide cubic feet by 27) to get the volume. For weight-based orders, multiply cubic yards by a typical ton-per-cubic-yard factor for the material group gravel, sand, dirt, stone or use Hello Gravel’s material calculator for a quick estimate. When in doubt, order a little extra to allow for compaction and grading.
Yes. Street drops, curbside parking for trucks, and public right-of-way placement can require city permits, and HOAs may have rules about visible surface materials and rock use. Check North St. Paul city ordinances and your HOA guidelines before scheduling delivery, and mention any permit needs in your order notes so your supplier and hauler can plan accordingly. If you’re unsure, contact our team for guidance.
Some contractors offer spreading and compaction as a separate service, but standard deliveries are drop-offs only. Hello Gravel drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion if you request it at checkout, but this is not guaranteed and depends on safety and site conditions. For guaranteed spreading and compaction, hire a local contractor or request those services explicitly when booking.
Start with your primary goal: drainage and erosion control call for coarser, free-draining products, while top dressing and planting beds may benefit from finer, more workable materials. The group gravel, sand, dirt, stone covers a wide range of textures and functions, so pick a product that balances function, appearance, and budget, and ask suppliers for local examples. Our material quiz and sales team can help match products to your specific needs.
Expect a dump truck to arrive on the scheduled date; the driver will confirm placement and look for safe access points before dumping material. Have vehicles moved, pets secured, and any placement notes visible to help the driver; if spreading was requested, the driver will decide whether it can be done safely. You will receive delivery confirmation and should inspect the material and placement, then contact customer service promptly with any issues.
Natural aggregates vary by region, so color and texture may differ from photos; this is common with local sourcing. Contact Hello Gravel customer service as soon as possible to request order changes—modifications are easier before the order is dispatched—and we will work to resolve concerns per our policies. If there is a quality or delivery issue, report it promptly so we can investigate and help find a satisfactory solution.
