Local Insights
Montevideo has a population of 6,760 and sits within a broader regional market that serves a metro area of 2.5+ million. With a steady growth rate of 0.40% annually, local construction and renovation activity tends to be measured—supporting consistent demand for repairs, yard upgrades, and small-scale additions rather than sudden building booms. The local climate — about 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall — combined with a hardiness zone of 8b affects what materials work best: homeowners and contractors prioritize products that manage moisture well, resist sun exposure, and support plant choices suited to the zone. That translates into steady need for well-graded base materials, reliable topsoil mixes, moisture-retentive soils and mulches, and aggregates suited for drainage and erosion control. Choosing quality bulk materials matters in Montevideo because properly matched materials reduce maintenance, protect foundations and planted areas, and extend the life of hardscape projects.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by matching the material to the function you need: structural bases and driveways require stable, well-graded aggregates; drainage or bedding needs more-permeable materials; and decorative areas prioritize color and texture. Because materials are regionally sourced, consider how local clay, sand, or stone behave in West Minnesota weather, and use our material calculator or contact our team for a recommendation. Common options include gravel, sand, dirt, stone for similar uses, and our sales team can help pick the best balance of performance and cost.
We supply materials for a wide range of projects including driveways, walkways, patios, base for pavers, garden beds, and erosion control. The same material family (gravel, sand, dirt, stone) can serve different roles depending on size and gradation, so choose materials based on load, drainage needs, and appearance. If you are unsure, tell us the project type and typical dimensions and we will suggest suitable options.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause frost heave and shifting, so materials that compact well and shed water tend to perform better through winter. Expect regional variations in material moisture and freezing behavior; proper drainage and compacted base layers reduce winter damage. Schedule sensitive installations outside deep-freeze months when possible and discuss winter-ready options with our team.
For best results, plan deliveries and installations in spring through fall when ground is thawed and compactable; major earthwork during freeze and thaw periods risks rutting and poor compaction. Our standard delivery window is 2+ business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee, so book early in peak season. If you must deliver in winter, expect additional considerations for surface protection, access, and timing.
Deliveries are typically made by contracted dump trucks (often tri-axle) and have a minimum order size of about 3 tons. Rural deliveries can incur extra travel or access fees for long drives, narrow lanes, or tight turns, and drivers will assess drop locations on arrival; tailgate spreading can be requested at checkout but is done at the driver's discretion. Always check your zip code for service availability and tell us about any site restrictions when you order.
Yes, some township or county roads near Montevideo have seasonal weight restrictions or road bans during spring thaw, and special permits may be required for heavy loads or long hauls. You should also check for HOA rules, city permits for public right-of-way work, and buried utilities before delivery. If you are unsure, contact local public works and let our team know about narrow roads, low bridges, or other restrictions when you place your order.
Pricing depends on material type, local availability, distance from the supplier, load size, and site access difficulty. Seasonal demand and regional sourcing in West Minnesota also influence price, and any special services like next-day delivery or spreading may add fees. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing at checkout and can explain any additional charges before you confirm your order.
Use our online material calculator or multiply area by depth to get cubic yards, then convert to tons—1 cubic yard is roughly 1.2 to 1.7 tons depending on the material density. For example, a 10 ft by 10 ft area at 2 inches deep is about 0.6 cubic yards; larger or compacted bases will need more. When in doubt, order a little extra for compaction and clean-up and contact our team for help with exact estimates.
Clear the intended drop zone of vehicles, obstacles, and low-hanging branches, and mark the preferred placement with flags or cones so the driver can see it on arrival. Provide a firm turnaround area if possible—soft or narrow drives can limit truck access and may incur extra fees or alternate drop plans. Request tailgate spreading at checkout if you want it and be ready for the driver to assess safety and feasibility on site.
Because materials reflect local geology, color and texture can vary from photos; if the material differs from what you expected, contact customer service promptly so we can review options. Order changes are easiest before the load is processed or dispatched, so reach out as soon as possible and we will do our best to accommodate. For issues or disputes, our team will guide you through the next steps and our refund policy.
