Local Insights
Knife River’s city population is 355, situated inside a larger regional market with a metro area population of 2.5+ million. That modest, steady growth at a rate of 0.40% annually means demand for home improvements and small-scale construction is consistent rather than boom-driven—homeowners are more likely to invest in durable upgrades, routine drainage fixes, and landscape refreshes over time. With 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, materials need to balance permeability and erosion resistance; hardiness zone 8b also shapes planting and soil-amendment choices. For homeowners this translates to selecting materials that perform through both bright, dry stretches and moderate wet periods—proper base layers, well-graded aggregates, and resilient topdressing materials reduce maintenance and extend project life.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by matching the material to the job: think about drainage, load-bearing needs, and how the surface will be used. Consider regional factors like freeze-thaw cycles and choose from local options such as gravel, sand, dirt, stone based on whether you need drainage, compaction, or a decorative finish. If you’re unsure, use Hello Gravel’s material quiz or contact our team for a quick recommendation.
Bulk aggregates are used for driveways, parking pads, base layers for patios and walkways, garden beds, erosion control, and utility backfill. Orders of gravel, sand, dirt, stone can serve both homeowner landscaping and contractor construction needs depending on depth and compaction requirements. For each project type, estimate depth and coverage to determine quantity and whether a compacted base is needed.
Cold weather and freeze-thaw cycles can cause frost heave when fine, poorly draining materials are used, so prioritize materials and mixes that promote drainage. Using local gravel, sand, dirt, stone with adequate drainage and proper compaction reduces movement and settling. Plan for seasonal maintenance and choose materials that handle wet springs and snowy winters in the region.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide on the desired depth, then use a cubic yard or ton calculator to convert volume to weight; Hello Gravel’s online calculator can help. As a rule of thumb, small Knife River orders start at a 3-ton minimum, so round up to the next practical quantity to avoid shortfalls. If you’re unsure, send measurements to our team and we’ll confirm quantities for your project.
Standard delivery usually takes 2 or more business days, and next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Materials are delivered by local contracted dump truck fleets, typically tri-axles, so schedule a delivery date at checkout and expect variability based on local supplier availability. Confirm access and any special instructions when you place your order to help ensure a smooth delivery.
Yes—narrow roads, low-hanging wires, tight driveways, soft ground, or limited turning room can restrict truck access, and drivers may refuse delivery if it’s unsafe. Mention any access constraints in order notes and consider alternative drop spots or smaller truck requests when possible. Request tailgate spreading at checkout if desired, but note the driver will assess safety and there are no guarantees.
Spring and fall are peak seasons for outdoor projects, which can lengthen lead times and raise delivery costs due to higher demand and limited local supply. Winter can limit availability because of frozen ground and road conditions, though some materials may still be delivered depending on access. To avoid delays and price spikes in Knife River, plan and order early, especially for larger projects.
Price depends on the material type, distance from the local supplier, load size, delivery window (standard vs next-day), and any extra services like spreading or special access needs. Smaller towns can see higher per-ton delivery charges because trucks travel farther between jobs, and fuel or seasonal surcharges may apply. No—because Hello Gravel sources materials regionally, texture, color, and size can vary with local geology, so photos are representative but not exact. Expect natural variation in gravel, sand, dirt, stone and note color or texture preferences in your order notes if you have a strong preference. If appearance is critical, request a sample or contact customer service before ordering.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion and you can request this service at checkout, but spreading is not guaranteed and depends on site safety and truck setup. For precise grading, compacting, or finished surfacing, hire a local contractor or equipment rental for a professional result. Always plan for some redistribution and compaction after delivery to achieve a finished surface.
Possibly—local ordinances, county road rules, or homeowner association guidelines can affect where trucks can park, whether road permits are required, and how much material you can place on a property. Check with Knife River city or county officials and your HOA before delivery, and tell us about any permit requirements so we can coordinate with the supplier. Hello Gravel can help advise on common access issues but cannot obtain permits on your behalf.
Contact our team as soon as possible—changes are easiest to accommodate before the order is processed and the truck is dispatched. We will do our best to modify deliveries, adjust quantities, or reschedule but changes depend on supplier and truck availability, so early notice helps. For issues after delivery, report them promptly so we can work toward a satisfactory resolution per our policies.
