Local Insights
Kabetogama has a city population of 330, set inside a larger regional market with a metro area population of 2.5+ million. Its modest growth rate of 0.40% annually points to steady, incremental demand for home improvement and infrastructure work rather than rapid development. For homeowners that means consistent opportunities for maintenance, upgrades, and small-scale construction projects—driveways, drainage fixes, raised beds, and landscape refreshes—rather than sudden spikes in contractor availability or material shortages. The local climate, with 228 sunny days per year and annual rainfall of 34.25 inches in hardiness zone 8b, creates a need to balance sun exposure and stormwater management. That mix highlights the value of good-quality, locally sourced bulk materials—soil mixes, sand, mulch, stone, and aggregates—that improve drainage, reduce erosion, and resist UV and weathering over time.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by defining the project's purpose (drainage, load-bearing, appearance, or erosion control) and the area and depth you need. Consider how local weather and seasonal freeze-thaw will affect performance, and think about maintenance and snowplowing. Use Hello Gravel's material calculator and quiz for guidance, and contact our team for recommendations based on materials like gravel, sand, dirt, stone.
For driveways choose a material that compacts well, sheds water, and can handle vehicle loads and snowplowing. Make sure to plan a proper base and drainage to reduce frost heave during freeze-thaw cycles. If you are unsure about depths or mixes, ask our team for typical depth ranges and installation tips.
Pick materials that balance appearance, drainage, and comfort underfoot while reflecting local color and texture variations. For walkways and patios select a stable, well-draining option that resists displacement during freeze-thaw and snow removal. Consider ordering a small test amount to confirm look and feel before buying in bulk.
Freeze-thaw can cause frost heave, shifting, and settling if drainage and compaction are inadequate. Use well-draining materials and proper base preparation to reduce problems, and allow for seasonal settling in your project timeline. Regular maintenance after winter helps preserve surface performance.
Measure the area in feet, decide on the desired depth in inches, and use a material calculator to convert cubic feet to tons. Typical depths vary by project type, so reference common ranges or contact our team for a quick estimate. Remember our minimum order is 3 tons and ordering a little extra for settling and compaction is recommended.
Standard delivery is typically available in 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is an option for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Deliveries come by dump truck (often tri-axle) and availability depends on your zip code and local supplier networks. Check your zip code at checkout to confirm service and timing.
Yes. Trucks need clear access, adequate turning radius, and overhead clearance; soft or steep driveways may limit safe drop points. Mark your preferred dump location and remove obstacles if possible, and notify our team of any access concerns so we can coordinate with the driver. Tight access or long carry distances can result in additional charges.
Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion and will assess safety and feasibility upon arrival. You can request spreading at checkout, but this service is not guaranteed and depends on site conditions and the driver's judgment. For consistent spreading, arrange for a third-party landscaper or spreading crew.
Because materials are regionally sourced, texture and coloration can vary based on local geology. Photos are representative; exact matches cannot be guaranteed. If color or texture is important, request notes on your order or ask for a sample before placing a large order.
Remote location, long haul from the supplier, narrow or difficult access, unexpected long carries, and last-minute next-day requests can add fees. Small orders below the minimum or deliveries requiring permits or escorts may also increase cost. We will communicate any additional charges before finalizing delivery when possible.
Some townships, county roads, or HOAs may have rules about large deliveries, driveways, or curb cuts. Check with local authorities or your HOA before delivery; Hello Gravel can help flag common issues but cannot confirm all local permit requirements. If a permit or special arrangement is needed, share that information when ordering so we can coordinate.
Winter can be both an advantage and a challenge: frozen ground can make dumping easier, but snow, ice, and weather delays are possible. Schedule earlier, allow extra lead time, and communicate site conditions so the hauler can prepare. Consider where material will be stored and how snowplowing will interact with new material.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible to request changes or cancellations; modifications are easiest before the order is processed or dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate requests but cannot guarantee changes after a truck is scheduled. See our order terms for details on timing and potential fees.
Plan deliveries around site access, staging space, and multiple-truck scheduling for large projects. Order to project-specific depths and factor in compaction, waste, and seasonal delays common in northern Minnesota. For repeat deliveries, share project timelines with our team to coordinate consistent supply from local suppliers.
