Local Insights
Jordan is a city of 10,010 residents experiencing modest, steady growth at 0.40% annually. That measured increase suggests ongoing, reliable demand for home improvements rather than a sudden boom—more routine landscaping, driveway repairs, and small-scale construction projects than large speculative development. Local climate and geography shape material needs: with 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, homeowners balance a long planting season with enough precipitation to require careful drainage and erosion control. Practical bulk materials—soil and topdressings, sand for leveling, aggregates for drainage and driveways, and mulch for gardens—help manage runoff, promote healthy planting beds, and provide durable surfaces in this mixed-weather environment. Choosing consistent, regionally sourced materials reduces surprises in color, texture, and performance. Jordan’s combination of sunny conditions and moderate rainfall creates specific challenges for material performance. Periods of drying followed by wet weather mean settling, compaction, and erosion are common concerns; materials should be selected for stable gradation, proper screening, and appropriate organic content for planting. For homeowners, that means matching materials to function—drainage mixes where water collects, heavier aggregates for driveways, and amended soils for gardens—rather than one-size-fits-all solutions. Hello Gravel helps by connecting you to local suppliers who understand regional soil and climate, offering tools and expert guidance to estimate quantities, schedule deliveries at convenient times, and choose materials that perform in Jordan’s conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Local projects typically use a mix of bulk aggregates like gravel, sand, dirt, stone and mulch. These materials are chosen for functions such as drainage, base layers, top dressing, and decorative beds. Because Hello Gravel sources regionally, texture and color can vary depending on local geology.
Start by defining the job: drainage, driveway base, pathways, or decorative beds. Then pick a material group (gravel, sand, dirt, stone) that matches that function and local climate—porous materials for drainage, firmer mixes for driveways, and decorative mixes for beds. If you are unsure, use Hello Gravel’s material quiz or contact the sales team for guidance based on your project size and site conditions.
Coverage depends on the material and the depth you need, but a common tri-axle dump truck carries roughly 10 cubic yards. As a rule of thumb, one cubic yard covers 324 sq ft at 1 inch depth, so a 10-yard load covers about 1,080 sq ft at 3 inches deep. Always allow for compaction and waste and use the material calculator for a more precise estimate.
Most residential jobs are estimated by cubic yards, but Hello Gravel’s minimum order is 3 tons which converts to roughly 1.5–2 cubic yards depending on the material. Small pathways or garden beds often need 2–5 cubic yards, while driveways and larger grading jobs can need 10+ cubic yards. Use the online calculator or contact us with project dimensions for a custom estimate.
Prices vary by material, size, and delivery, and reflect local availability and truck routing. Typical ballpark ranges for common aggregates can span from low-cost fill up to higher-priced decorative stone; for an accurate price, get a quote for your zip code. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing at checkout and you can view delivery fees and alternatives before ordering.
Lower-cost options are generally basic fill-type materials sourced locally, but prices depend on supply and demand in West Minnesota. Decorative or specialty stone and custom blends usually cost more due to processing and transport. If budget is a priority, request basic aggregate options in your quote and we can suggest cost-effective choices in the Jordan area.
A helpful guideline is to use layers and contrasts: a base layer for structure, a middle layer for transition, and a top layer for aesthetics—using odd-number groupings and varying sizes helps create visual balance. Think in terms of function first (drainage, stability, appearance) and then pick materials from the group of gravel, sand, dirt, stone that meet those needs. For plant beds, leave a couple of inches of soil surface for planting and avoid placing stone directly against plant trunks.
Occasionally local construction projects, municipal roadwork, or neighbors clearing lots may offer free materials, but availability is inconsistent and often requires permission and cleanup. Check local community boards, municipal surplus programs, or reuse groups and always confirm you have legal access before taking material. For a reliable, clean source delivered to your site, Hello Gravel provides scheduled delivery and vetted suppliers.
Standard delivery requires at least 2 business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Deliveries are made by contracted dump truck fleets (typically tri-axle); minimum order is 3 tons and tailgate spreading may be offered at the driver’s discretion but is not guaranteed. You can choose a preferred delivery date at checkout and the hauler will confirm the day before delivery.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible if you need to modify or cancel an order; changes are easier before the order is processed or dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but modifications depend on supplier and hauler schedules and are not guaranteed. If there is an issue with your delivery or material, reach out to customer service and we will work to resolve it according to our policies.
