Local Insights
Halstad is a small but active community (city population 600) sitting within a larger regional economy (metro area population 2.5+ million). Its modest, steady growth rate of 0.40% annually points to ongoing, incremental demand for home improvements and light construction rather than boom-level development. With an average of 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, local projects must balance sun exposure with periodic wet weather—meaning homeowners and contractors need materials that handle both moisture and UV exposure. That creates steady demand for a mix of materials—drainage-friendly aggregates, topsoil and fill, sand for leveling, and surface materials for paths and driveways—that support durable, low-maintenance landscapes and reliable site drainage.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Halstad and West Minnesota experience regular freeze–thaw cycles that can cause heaving and shifting if the wrong materials are used. For load-bearing or drainage applications choose materials that drain well and compact to a stable base; for top layers pick materials that shed water and resist movement. Expect regional variations, and ask our team for recommendations based on your planned use and slope.
Low-lying areas and clay-rich soils are common in this region and can hold water, so drainage is often the primary concern. Use permeable base materials to promote runoff and reserve finer materials for leveling or finish surfaces. If you have known standing water or poor soil, plan for additional grading or underdrain systems and consult our team for suitable material blends.
The most reliable window is late spring through early fall when the ground is thawed and drier, which makes compaction and spreading easier. Winter deliveries are possible but may be limited by frozen ground, snow, and road restrictions, and cold weather can affect how materials settle. For quickest delivery, order at least 2 business days ahead or use next-day service if you place the order before noon CST.
Deliveries are made by local dump trucks, typically tri-axle, so you need adequate turn radius, height clearance, and a stable surface for the truck to stop. Narrow rural lanes, soft shoulders, overhead wires, steep driveways, or weak bridge weight limits can require alternate drop locations or smaller trucks. Include detailed access notes at checkout and our team or the driver will confirm feasibility before dispatch.
Some projects may trigger city, county, or HOA rules, especially for driveway changes, culvert work, or visible front-yard alterations. Halstad and nearby townships may have seasonal weight limits or permitting requirements for road or culvert work, so check with your city or county before ordering. If you are unsure, we recommend contacting local officials and noting permit needs in your order so our team can advise.
Regional suppliers in West Minnesota typically stock common aggregates, topsoil blends, and basic landscape materials, so gravel, sand, dirt, and stone in standard sizes are usually available. Specialty colors, washed fines, or unusual rock types may require special orders or longer transport from outside the region. If you need a specific look or spec, request a quote early so we can confirm availability and lead time.
Proper preparation includes grading to promote drainage, compacting base layers, and installing a proper subbase or geotextile where frost heave is a concern. For areas with repeated freeze–thaw cycles consider deeper, well-draining base materials and avoid using only fine materials at the surface. Discuss your expected traffic loads with our team so you can choose the right depth and material mix for long-term performance.
Typical jobs include driveways, grading and drainage fixes, raised garden beds, and base layers for patios or pavers. As a rule of thumb, driveways often start around a few tons for small repairs to many tons for a full resurfacing, while garden beds and small patios can be satisfied with smaller truckloads; our material calculator can convert your dimensions into tons. Contact us with your project size for a tailored estimate and remember our minimum order is 3 tons.
Standard delivery is scheduled for 2 or more business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Minimum orders are 3 tons and deliveries are handled by contracted local trucking fleets rather than Hello Gravel-branded trucks. You can request tailgate spreading at checkout but drivers perform spreading at their discretion and it is not guaranteed.
Start by defining the function you need: drainage, load-bearing base, leveling, or surface finish. Pick materials that match that function—drainage-friendly mixes for wet areas, compacting bases for driveways, and finer top layers where smooth finish is needed—and consider local climate and traffic. Use our online material quiz or contact our sales team for guidance tailored to your site conditions and project goals.
Pricing varies by material type, local availability, seasonal demand, and haul distance; specialty materials and long hauls usually cost more. Hello Gravel provides transparent pricing and quotes online, and you can view delivery options and any additional fees during checkout.
