Local Insights
Goodland is a small Minnesota community with a city population of 290, yet it sits within a larger regional market that includes a metro area population of 2.5+ million and a steady growth rate of 0.40% annually. That modest, consistent growth usually means steady demand for home improvements, infill projects, and local infrastructure work rather than sudden construction booms. With 228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, homeowners face a mix of drying and wetting cycles that influence material choice: surfaces need to shed water efficiently after storms, planting beds should retain enough moisture during sunny stretches, and erosion control matters on slopes and new excavations. For these reasons, quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone—play a central role in driveways, drainage systems, planting projects, and retaining features, and regional sourcing helps ensure the right textures and gradations for local conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

It depends on traffic, drainage, and budget. For most driveways in Goodland, choose a material that compacts well and drains, and consider local options like gravel, sand, dirt, stone which reflect regional geology. Homeowners often use compactable mixes for a stable surface, while contractors may select specific gradations for durability. Use our material calculator and quiz to compare options for your exact driveway size and use.
Materials that shed water and keep the base stable perform better through freeze-thaw seasons. Well-draining, angular aggregates and a properly prepared base help prevent frost heave, so consider regional mixes of gravel, sand, dirt, stone with good drainage. Proper compaction and site drainage are as important as the material choice. Ask suppliers about local performance and seasonal best practices.
Spring through early fall is usually the easiest time to install bulk materials because ground conditions are workable and weather is milder. Winter work is possible but often limited by frozen ground and shorter daylight, which can affect delivery and spreading. Plan ahead and check local weather, and allow 2+ business days for standard delivery or request next-day service if needed.
Yes, deliveries to rural addresses are commonly available within our service area, but access, road conditions, and property layout affect feasibility. Materials are delivered by dump truck, so narrow lanes, low-hanging wires, or soft ground may require alternative drop locations. Check your zip code on our site and contact our team with site details so we can confirm delivery options and any access requirements.
Measure the length and width of the area, choose the desired depth in inches, and convert to cubic yards (length x width x depth in feet ÷ 27). Most customers then convert cubic yards to tons using our calculator because different materials have different weights. We recommend ordering a little extra to allow for compaction and waste. Use Hello Gravel's material calculator or contact our team for help with your specific project.
Costs vary based on material type, quantity, and delivery distance from local suppliers. Hello Gravel displays transparent pricing during checkout and notes a minimum order of 3 tons. Standard delivery typically takes 2+ business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. For a precise estimate, check your zip code and enter your project details online.
Supply-only prices cover the delivered material and depend on type and quantity, while installed costs add labor, equipment, spreading, and compaction. Installed prices vary widely by job complexity, site access, and local labor rates in the Goodland area. Ask local contractors for installation quotes and compare those to the delivered material price shown on our site. That helps you decide whether to DIY or hire installation services.
Standard delivery requires 2+ business days, but same-week delivery is often possible depending on local supplier availability and weather. Next-day delivery is an option for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee, and urgent requests can sometimes be accommodated. Check availability by entering your zip code at checkout or contact our support team to confirm timing for your specific address.
Both help with drainage but serve different roles: gravel and stone generally allow faster through-flow and are better for sub-bases and erosion control, while sand is useful for leveling and filling joints. The right choice depends on slope, soil type, and whether you need a load-bearing base or surface material, so consider mixes of gravel, sand, dirt, stone to meet both drainage and stability needs. If drainage is the priority, prioritize well-draining aggregates and good site grading.
Drivers deliver from dump trucks and may be able to place material close to your desired spot, but placement depends on truck access, safety, and site conditions. Tailgate spreading can sometimes be performed at the driver's discretion; request placement instructions at checkout and note that spreading is not guaranteed. Prepare a clear drop zone before delivery to minimize handling and additional labor.
Not always; because we source regionally, texture and color of gravel, sand, dirt, stone can vary based on local geology. Photos and samples are a general guide, but natural variation is normal. If color or texture is important, add preferences in your order notes and ask about sample availability before purchasing.
