Local Insights
Comfrey has a city population of 790 and sits inside a wider metro area of 2.5+ million, which supports steady demand for housing, repairs, and small-scale development. A growth rate of 0.40% annually signals modest, reliable expansion rather than rapid building booms—meaning homeowners and local contractors often prioritize targeted upgrades, landscape renewals, and incremental site work. Local climate matters: with 228 sunny days per year, 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, and a hardiness zone of 8b, projects need materials that balance drainage and durability while supporting plant palettes suited to milder winters. For homeowners this translates into regular needs for base materials, topsoil and soil amendments, mulch and organic products, and aggregates for driveways, drainage runs, and patios. Regional sourcing also means material texture and color will reflect local geology, so planning for appearance and performance together is important.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners and contractors in Comfrey commonly order gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for projects such as driveways, grading, drainage, raised beds, and general site fill. These materials are sold by weight or volume and come in a range of sizes and blends, so you can pick options that balance drainage, compaction, and appearance. If you are unsure which to choose, use a material calculator or contact our team for guidance.
In areas with freeze-thaw cycles, choose materials and layer systems that promote good drainage and resist frost heave. A stable base layer combined with a draining surface layer helps water move away from the subgrade and reduces movement during freezes. Talk to our team about the project goal (long-term driveway, temporary access, or landscaping) so we can recommend appropriate layer depths and material types.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth of the area to calculate cubic yards, then convert to tons if needed using our material calculator. Typical depths vary by use: shallow top layers for landscaping, deeper bases for driveways or heavy loads; check product pages for recommended depths. If you prefer, send your dimensions to our team and we can help with the estimate.
Hello Gravel serves Comfrey and nearby zip codes in West Minnesota; check availability with your zip code. Standard delivery typically requires 2+ business days and a minimum order of 3 tons, while next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Rural or remote deliveries may have longer lead times or additional charges depending on supplier and haul distance.
Make sure the delivery area is accessible for a tri-axle dump truck: clear overhead wires, ensure adequate driveway width and turning room, and provide a stable spot for the truck to park. Decide where you want the pile placed and note any hazards in Order Notes; drivers will place material where safe and practical but may not move it once dumped. If you need spreading, request tailgate spreading at checkout, but know the driver will assess feasibility and no spreading is guaranteed.
Material-only orders are generally priced per ton or per cubic yard plus a delivery fee, while full installation includes additional charges for labor, equipment, grading, compaction, and disposal. Installation quotes from contractors will reflect crew time, machinery, and any site prep or permit work, so compare both kinds of quotes based on total scope. Hello Gravel focuses on material sourcing and delivery, and you can share our delivered price with contractors for clearer budgeting.
No. Because Hello Gravel sources regionally, the color, texture, and exact gradation of natural materials like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone can vary based on local geology. Photos are a guide, and you can add color or texture preferences in Order Notes, but exact matches are not guaranteed. Contact customer service if appearance is critical before ordering.
Permit and inspection requirements vary by township and county; small repairs and simple landscaping often need no permit, while new driveways, significant regrading, changes to drainage, or work affecting a public right-of-way commonly require approval. Check with the Nobles County or local township office for specific rules and any culvert or setback requirements before starting work. If you are working with a contractor, they can usually advise on permit needs.
Winter conditions and thaw cycles can limit site access, affect compaction, and slow deliveries; spring mud and standing water may also complicate placement and grading. For best results, schedule material deliveries and installation during drier months or when the ground is stable, and allow extra lead time in winter or spring. If you must work in shoulder seasons, plan for possible delays and communicate site conditions to the supplier before delivery.
Contact our team as soon as possible if you need to modify or cancel an order; changes are easiest before the order is processed or dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate requests, but modifications may be limited once the supplier or truck is scheduled. For details about refunds or credits, see our order policies or contact customer service.
