Local Insights
Clear Lake is a community of 5,400 residents. A steady growth rate of 0.40% annually suggests predictable, ongoing demand for home improvements, landscaping updates, and smaller construction projects rather than rapid large-scale development. With 34.25 inches of annual rainfall and 228 sunny days per year in hardiness zone 8b, Clear Lake’s climate creates alternating wet and dry conditions that change how materials perform; homeowners need products that handle drainage, resist erosion, and tolerate seasonal freeze-thaw cycles. For local projects that means a balanced mix of aggregates, soils, sands, and mulches: permeable bases for driveways and paths, engineered soils and topsoil for planting, and stable fills for grading. Choosing quality, regionally sourced bulk materials reduces the risk of rework and helps landscapes and structures last through Clear Lake’s seasonal swings.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Common projects include driveways, patios, drainage improvements, shoreline stabilization, raised garden beds, and general landscaping. These jobs often use a combination of gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other aggregates, and are well suited to bulk delivery by dump truck.
Start by matching the material characteristics to the job: look for good drainage and compaction for driveways, finer washed material for beach or play areas, and heavier angular stone for drainage or erosion control. If you are unsure, use Hello Gravel’s material calculator or contact our team with project dimensions and desired appearance for tailored guidance.
Measure the area (length x width) and determine the desired depth in inches, then convert to cubic yards or tons using a calculator. Hello Gravel provides an online calculator and help from our team; a common minimum order is 3 tons, so small jobs may require ordering the minimum quantity.
No — due to regional sourcing, color and texture can vary based on local geology and seasonal conditions. Photos are representative; you can add color or texture notes at checkout and contact customer service if visual match is critical.
Properly chosen and installed materials minimize runoff and sedimentation; for shoreline work choose clean, washed aggregates and erosion-control products and follow best management practices to limit material entering the lake. For projects near the water, check local permits and the Minnesota DNR guidance to reduce environmental risk.
Washed sand and properly graded aggregates can be used for beach projects, but testing and permitting may be needed in some cases and material should be free of contaminants. Always follow local rules, consider shoreline protection measures, and consult local authorities if you plan to alter the shoreline.
Standard delivery typically takes 2+ business days, with next-day delivery available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Deliveries are made by contracted dump trucks; provide clear access instructions, a stable drop zone, and note overhead wires or tight turns during checkout to avoid delays.
Tailgate spreading may be available at the driver’s discretion and can be requested at checkout, but it is not guaranteed. Drivers will assess site conditions for safety and feasibility on arrival; plan to do final grading yourself or hire a local contractor if precise spreading is needed.
Yes — Minnesota winters can limit access to dropsites and affect ground conditions; frozen ground may make placement easier for some projects but harder for others. Plan projects for spring through fall when possible, and contact our team to discuss timing, storage on site, and winter delivery options.
Contact Hello Gravel customer service promptly with photos and details so we can work with the supplier to resolve the issue. We will review the order and delivery and follow our issue resolution process; see our policies online for specifics on claims and next steps.
Possibly — shoreline changes, dredging, and major excavations often require local permits or Minnesota DNR approval. Before ordering bulk materials for these types of jobs, check local township and DNR regulations and, when in doubt, contact Hello Gravel for planning guidance so you don’t order materials you cannot use.
Regional sourcing, material type, season, haul distances, and the truck access needed all influence cost and lead time. Hello Gravel provides transparent pricing during checkout, and our network of local suppliers helps keep options available; contact us if you need a formal quote or scheduling details.
