Local Insights
Callaway is a small community of 690 residents inside a larger regional economy that serves a metro area of 2.5+ million. With a steady growth rate of 0.40% annually, demand for residential repairs, yard upgrades, and modest new construction is consistent rather than explosive — meaning homeowners can expect steady, practical work rather than boom-time projects. The local climate, with about 228 sunny days per year and roughly 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, supports a wide variety of landscapes but also creates specific demands: materials must balance drainage and stability during wet spells with durability under long sun exposure. For homeowners that means selecting aggregates, soils, mulches, and sands that resist erosion, settle predictably, and support plantings suited to the zone. Quality bulk materials and reliable delivery matter here because regionally sourced supplies reflect local geology and performance, reducing surprises and improving long-term results across landscaping and construction projects.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Consider gravel, sand, dirt, and stone as broad groups and choose based on the job: structural bases need angular, compactable material while surface layers prioritize drainage and appearance. Factor in load (cars vs foot traffic), drainage needs, desired look, and maintenance frequency. Regional sourcing means local materials will vary in color and texture, so request photos or samples when possible.
Freeze–thaw cycles and snow can cause settling, heaving, and rutting if materials and base preparation are not suitable. Choose materials that compact well and allow water to drain, build a proper base, and account for extra depth where frost is deep. Regular maintenance such as periodic regrading and topping up helps extend lifespan in snowy climates.
Spring through early fall is the most practical window for delivery and installation after soils thaw and before freeze-up, though many projects can be done in summer. Allow at least 2 business days for standard delivery and order earlier in peak season; next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Plan around weather and ground conditions to avoid working on saturated or frozen sites.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide the depth in inches, then calculate volume in cubic yards (area in sq ft x depth in inches / 324). Convert to tons using a rough range (many aggregates weigh about 1.2 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard depending on material). Use Hello Gravel’s material calculator or contact our team with your dimensions for a quick estimate.
Minimum orders are commonly around 3 tons for dump-truck deliveries, which is Hello Gravel’s minimum. Delivery radius and fees depend on local suppliers and haulers; many areas offer free delivery but long-distance or next-day requests may incur additional charges. Check your zip code at checkout for specific pricing and any travel fees.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion; you can request it at checkout but the driver will assess safety and feasibility on arrival. There are no guarantees of spreading services, and drivers may decline if conditions or equipment prevent safe spreading. If spreading is important, plan for a crew or equipment to finish the job.
Clear the drop area of obstacles, mark preferred placement with stakes or cones, and ensure access for a tri-axle dump truck with room to turn and park. Expect the driver to confirm the order and place material where it is safest and most practical; discuss spreading needs if requested. Have a contact on site or reachable by phone to handle questions and emergencies.
Permit and right-of-way requirements vary by city and county; many driveway modifications require a permit or approval for curb cuts and connections to public roads. Check with Callaway city hall or Becker County before starting a project, and verify utility locations to avoid damage during delivery or installation. Hello Gravel can help flag common regulations but cannot provide legal advice.
Common projects include driveway construction and repairs, patio and walkway bases, drainage swales and French drains, erosion control, raised garden beds and yard fill, and base layers for retaining walls or pavers. Each project has different material and depth needs, so match material choice to function—structural base, drainage layer, or decorative surface. Contractors often order larger volumes, while homeowners may opt for smaller, targeted deliveries.
Materials reflect local geology and seasonal stock, so color, grain size, and consistency can vary between suppliers and even between loads. Photos are representative but not exact; you can add color or size preferences in order notes and request a photo before delivery when possible. If appearance is critical, ask about samples or smaller test loads first.
Costs depend on material type and quality, quantity ordered, distance from supplier, road and site access, seasonal demand, and any special services like next-day delivery or spreading. Small towns may see higher per-ton haul costs if suppliers are farther away, while larger orders often reduce unit cost.
