Local Insights
Backus is a small but active community of 2,230 residents where modest, steady growth — about 0.40% annually — means ongoing demand for home maintenance, yard upgrades, and selective infill projects rather than rapid build-outs. That steady expansion keeps a steady need for bulk materials: everything from topsoil and mulch for garden refreshes to sand, gravel, and stone for driveways, drainage, and hardscape repairs. Backus’s climate—228 sunny days per year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b—creates a mix of sunny, dry stretches and significant precipitation events. That variability makes correctly specified, locally sourced aggregates and soils important for durability, drainage, and plant health. Homeowners benefit from materials matched to local geology and weather patterns, and contractors rely on consistent, measured deliveries to keep small-scale projects on schedule.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose based on the job: think about drainage, load-bearing needs, and finish. For structural bases (driveways, pads) choose coarser, compactable material; for leveling or bedding (pavers, setting stones) choose finer, more uniform material. Also consider Backus' freeze-thaw winters and regional sourcing, and use our online calculator or contact our team for a tailored recommendation. Remember our minimum order is 3 tons.
Price depends on local availability, grade, and delivery distance rather than the name alone. In some areas sand is cheaper, in others gravel is; specialty blends or screened products cost more. Get side-by-side quotes through Hello Gravel to compare total cost including delivery and minimum order.
These materials are used for driveways, drainage trenches, patios and walkways, base layers for pavers, backfill, and landscape beds. Contractors often pick coarser materials for structural bases and contractors or homeowners pick finer material for bedding and finishing. Your intended function—drainage, support, or aesthetics—should drive the choice.
A tri-axle dump truck commonly used for deliveries carries roughly 10–14 tons (about 12–16 cubic yards) depending on the material and local truck specs. Costs vary with material type, distance, and availability, so we provide quotes per order rather than flat prices; contact us for a customized estimate for Backus. Keep in mind our minimum order is 3 tons, which may be a better fit for smaller jobs.
The order depends on the project: for pavers the typical approach is a compacted gravel base for strength followed by a thin sand bedding for leveling. For simple gravel driveways you usually compact the gravel directly on a prepared subgrade without a sand layer. If you are unsure, describe your project to our team and we will suggest the right sequence.
Classification is based on particle size: sands are made of finer particles and gravels are larger, coarser pieces. If you are uncertain about a product listed by a supplier, ask for a product spec or a photo; regional suppliers in the Backus area can show typical samples because local geology affects the look and texture.
Gravel generally provides better structural strength and drainage because of larger particles and interlock, while sand is better for leveling and bedding but does not drain or lock up as well. The right approach for a load-bearing project is often a combination—gravel for the base and sand for a finish layer—so choose materials based on function, not just perceived strength.
Standard delivery typically takes 2 or more business days, with next-day delivery available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Deliveries arrive by contracted dump trucks (usually tri-axle); tailgate spreading can sometimes be done at the driver's discretion if requested at checkout, but it is not guaranteed. We source regionally, so material texture and color may vary from photos.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide the depth in inches, then convert to cubic yards; one quick rule is about 1.2–1.5 tons per cubic yard depending on the material. Use Hello Gravel's material calculator or contact our sales team for a precise estimate and to factor in compaction and waste. Ordering a little extra for grading and settling is usually a good idea.
