Local Insights
University Center has a population of 17, sitting within the broader West Michigan region that serves a metro area of 2.5+ million residents. That steady 1.20% annual growth signals consistent demand for modest-scale residential upgrades and occasional infill development rather than rapid urban expansion. With 228 sunny days a year balanced by about 34.25 inches of annual rainfall and a hardiness zone of 8b, homeowners here need materials that handle both wet periods and extended sun exposure. For landscaping and construction projects that translates into prioritizing good drainage, UV-resistant surface choices, and materials that tolerate seasonal moisture without rapid breakdown. Whether you are planning pathways, driveways, planting beds, or patio bases, ordering bulk supplies like gravel, sand, soil blends, mulch, and stone in the right quantities matters for long-term performance in this local context.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices depend on material type, local supply, order size, and delivery distance. For University Center orders, expect regional variations because materials are sourced locally; minimum orders start at 3 tons and dump-truck loads vary by truck size. Use our online quote or call to get an exact delivered price for your zip code. We can also explain any fees for tight access, permits, or special handling.
Deliveries are typically made by contracted tri-axle dump trucks that unload material at your site; standard delivery usually includes offload to the driveway or street-edge. Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion if requested at checkout, but spreading is never guaranteed. Extra charges can apply for long-haul, tight access, or required permits, so confirm details when you order.
Convert area and depth to cubic yards: 20 ft x 20 ft x 0.25 ft = 100 cubic feet, which is about 3.7 cubic yards. Add about 10% for compaction and waste, so plan on roughly 4.1 cubic yards. For weight estimates, aggregates like gravel, sand, dirt, stone vary in density, but a rough guide is 1.2 to 1.6 tons per cubic yard—contact us if you want a material-specific tonnage estimate.
For planting mixes, first pick a target depth; 2 to 3 inches is common for lawn/topdress and 4 to 6 inches for planting beds. At 3 inches, 1,000 sq ft needs about 9.3 cubic yards (1000 x 0.25 / 27). Spreading is often offered at the driver's discretion or via a separate landscaping crew; request spreading at checkout and get an on-site or phone estimate for installation fees.
Many local suppliers and haulers offer discounts for larger quantities and repeat business, and seasonal availability can affect pricing. Hello Gravel negotiates rates with our network and can often provide better pricing for bulk or repeat orders—ask our sales team for bundled options and seasonal promotions. Availability and discounts vary by zip code, so check your specific delivery area.
Standard delivery is scheduled for 2 or more business days after ordering, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Exact timing depends on supplier and truck availability in your zip code, and we confirm the delivery date during checkout. Keep in mind weather, holidays, and seasonal demand can impact scheduling.
Same-week delivery may be possible depending on local supplier and truck availability; place your order early and check the next-day option if you need fast service. On-site estimates for materials and spreading are sometimes available but not guaranteed—many customers use our material calculator and order notes to get an accurate quote without an in-person visit. Contact our sales team if you prefer an on-site review so we can advise on logistics and additional services.
Hello Gravel primarily supplies and arranges delivery of bulk materials, but we can often coordinate with local contractors for removal and installation services. Hauling away existing material, grading, and full installation are typically quoted separately and may require additional crews and disposal fees. Contact us with project details so we can connect you to local partners and provide an estimated combined cost.
Start by defining the project goals: drainage, load-bearing, appearance, and maintenance. Consider local climate and soil—materials sourced in University Center reflect regional geology and performance in West Michigan conditions. Use our online aggregate quiz or call our team to match the right gravel, sand, dirt, stone mix for your project, and ask about recommended depths and compaction.
Natural materials vary by region, so color and texture may not exactly match photos; this is normal with local sourcing. Contact customer service as soon as possible to request order changes; modifications are easier before processing and dispatch but cannot be guaranteed. If there is an issue with your delivery, reach out promptly and we will work with you and the supplier to resolve it according to our policies.
