Local Insights
Unionpier is home to 12,000 residents and sits within a steady, growing West Michigan market that is producing ongoing demand for home improvement and small-scale construction. A 1.20% annual growth rate points to consistent, manageable demand—more renovation and landscaping projects than a sudden building boom—so homeowners can plan upgrades over time. The local temperate climate, with 228 sunny days and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, creates a need for materials that balance sun exposure and moisture: durable base materials for drives and patios, well-structured soils for planting beds, and aggregates that help manage runoff. In hardiness zone 8b, a wide range of plants is viable but still depends on suitable soils and erosion controls. Together, these trends show why dependable access to bulk materials—topsoil, sand, gravel, mulch, and drainage stone—matters for long-lasting, low-maintenance results.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Delivery cost depends on quantity, distance from local suppliers, truck access, and current fuel or seasonal surcharges. Hello Gravel lists clear pricing at checkout when you enter your zip code and typically requires a minimum order; contact our team for a detailed quote that reflects local rates and any site-specific fees.
Choose materials and installation methods that shed water and resist movement from freeze-thaw cycles, such as compactable aggregate bases and well-draining surface materials. Ask about options among gravel, sand, dirt, stone and plan for a proper base, edge restraint, and adequate slope to manage runoff.
Local rules can cover driveway connections, shoreline setbacks, stormwater management, and erosion control, and some areas require permits for significant grading or new hardscapes. Contact Unionpier township or Berrien County building and zoning offices and check any HOA rules before ordering materials to avoid delays.
Measure the project area (length x width) and decide the desired depth, then multiply to get cubic feet and convert to cubic yards (27 cubic feet = 1 cubic yard). Use Hello Gravel’s material calculator or order notes, and add 5-10% extra for compaction, settling, and waste when converting to tons or yards for gravel, sand, dirt, stone.
Late spring through early fall is generally best because the ground is unfrozen and crews can compact and finish work reliably. Deliveries are possible year-round but expect heavier scheduling, access challenges, and potential added fees in winter or during rainy periods.
Materials that drain well and are installed over a stable, compacted base resist freeze-thaw damage better; fine, loose materials may wash away or rut more easily. Proper grading, drainage features, and occasional maintenance are often more important than the specific material type when planning for long-term performance.
We support a wide range of projects including driveways, walkways, patios, drainage and erosion control, raised beds, backfill, and general landscaping material delivery. Our platform connects you with local suppliers for gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other aggregates and helps schedule professional truck delivery.
Ensure clear vehicle access, remove obstacles and low-hanging branches, mark the preferred drop area, and protect lawns or paved surfaces if needed. Confirm any special delivery instructions at checkout; drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion but it is not guaranteed.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible—changes are easier before an order is processed and dispatched and depend on supplier and truck scheduling. If there is an issue on delivery, contact customer service promptly so we can work with the supplier and driver to resolve it according to our policies.
Installed costs vary widely by material, site prep, accessibility, and contractor rates; small projects can start at the low end while complex jobs with heavy grading run higher. Use ballpark ranges only as a planning tool and get local quotes: for example, simple gravel driveways typically range from modest to moderate per square foot, patios and structured hardscapes are higher, and drainage solutions depend on scope—contact our team or a local contractor for a precise estimate.
