Local Insights
With a population of 5,650, Petersburg sits within a growing West Michigan region that is part of a larger metro area of 2.5+ million residents. A steady 1.20% annual growth rate points to consistent, sustainable demand for home improvement and small-scale construction projects—think driveway repairs, patio installs, garden upgrades, and foundation grading—rather than sudden booms. The local climate and geography shape material needs: about 228 sunny days a year and 34.25 inches of rainfall create conditions that require both drainage-friendly aggregates and stable base materials. The area's hardiness zone of 8b supports diverse plantings, so homeowners often balance topsoil and mulches for planting beds with heavier materials for erosion control and hardscape bases. Choosing quality, regionally sourced bulk materials reduces rework, improves longevity, and helps projects perform well through seasonal cycles. Petersburg's mix of sunshine, moderate rain, and local soils means materials must deliver both permeability and stability. Variations in particle size, organic content, and compaction affect drainage, plant health, and surface durability; these factors matter whether you are leveling a yard, building a pathway, or refreshing planting areas. For homeowners, that means selecting materials that match site conditions and expected weather patterns. Hello Gravel simplifies this by connecting you to local suppliers familiar with regional geology, helping you estimate quantities and schedule delivery so materials arrive suited to Petersburg's specific needs.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices depend on the material type, quality, and how far it must be hauled, so there is no single citywide price. Use our online quote tool or request a local estimate for gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other aggregates in Petersburg (zip 49270) to see current rates and delivery fees. We can also show pricing per cubic yard or per ton to help you compare options.
Five cubic yards is exactly five cubic yards of material regardless of type, but weight will vary by material. As a rule of thumb, 1 cubic yard typically weighs between about 1 and 1.5 tons depending on density, so 5 cubic yards is roughly 5 to 7.5 tons. Use our material calculator to convert between cubic yards and tons for gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other aggregates.
Buying in bulk usually lowers the unit cost compared with small bags and reduces repeated delivery fees, especially for large projects. Factor in your storage space, project timeline, and the minimum order (we start at 3 tons) to determine if bulk makes sense for your job. If you are unsure, our sales team can help estimate quantities and compare costs for bulk versus smaller purchases.
Pickup bed capacity varies a lot by truck model, payload rating, and whether the material is loose or compacted, so one cubic yard may or may not be safe to haul. Loose aggregate can weigh from about 1 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard, which can exceed many light-duty pickup payload limits. We recommend checking your truck's payload rating or ordering delivery if you are unsure, and always avoid overloading for safety and legal reasons.
Most tri-axle dump trucks used for residential deliveries carry roughly 10 to 16 cubic yards, though actual capacity depends on local trucks and load restrictions. We coordinate with local haulers in Petersburg and will show the expected truck size and estimated volume when you place an order. If you need a smaller or staged delivery, let us know and we can try to arrange suitable options.
For a 20x20 area, depth matters: a 4-inch thick base requires about 5 cubic yards (20 ft x 20 ft x 0.333 ft = 133.3 cu ft / 27 = 4.94 cu yd). A 6-inch base needs about 7.5 cubic yards. Use our calculator to adjust for different depths, compaction allowances, and whether you are ordering gravel, sand, dirt, stone or another aggregate for the base.
Material choice depends on function: for stable driveways and bases you want a well-graded aggregate; for patios you need a firm compactable base; for garden beds you typically choose soils or blended topsoil with good organic content. Because Michigan soils and local stone vary, consider our aggregate quiz or contact our team to match gravel, sand, dirt, stone and blends to your specific project, budget, and local climate conditions.
Standard delivery typically takes 2 or more business days from order confirmation, and next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Delivery is scheduled with local haulers and confirmed with you, and drivers may be able to provide tailgate spreading at their discretion but it is not guaranteed. Check your zip code (start with 49270) at checkout to confirm availability and timing.
Contact our team as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel an order; changes are easier before the order is processed or the truck is dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate adjustments, but modifications may be limited once the supplier or hauler is scheduled. For best results, call or text our support numbers with your order details right away.
Because we source materials regionally, color, texture, and particle size can vary between suppliers and natural batches, so exact matches to photos are not guaranteed. If you have a color preference or need a specific texture, note that in your order or contact our team before delivery and we will try to accommodate it. If there is a concern after delivery, reach out to customer service and we will work with you and the supplier to resolve the issue.
