Local Insights
Lexington Heights, population 75,000, sits within a growing regional market and is experiencing steady demand for home improvement and small-scale construction projects as the area expands at a 1.20% annual growth rate. That steady growth—rather than a boom—means homeowners are often tackling renovations, driveway repairs, drainage upgrades, and landscape refreshes rather than large-scale subdivisions all at once. With 228 sunny days a year balanced against 34.25 inches of annual rainfall and a hardiness zone of 8b, local projects need materials that perform through both wet periods and extended sun exposure. In practice that means reliable base materials for drainage, durable aggregates for driveways and paths, and quality topsoil and mulch for plantings that must retain moisture during dry stretches. As local development continues across a metro area of 2.5+ million residents, sourcing the right bulk materials becomes a practical priority for long-term performance and curb appeal.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices vary by material type, supplier, and delivery distance, so there is no single citywide price. Hello Gravel provides transparent, itemized quotes and a material calculator so you can see delivered cost for gravel, sand, dirt, or stone before you order. Use the checkout to check your zip code and get an exact price for your project.
Calculate volume by multiplying area by depth and converting to cubic yards: (length x width x depth in feet) / 27. For example, a 20x20 area at 4 inches deep is about 5 cubic yards; different materials have different compaction rates, so allow a bit extra. If you prefer, use Hello Gravel's calculator or contact our team for help with common project depths.
Bulk deliveries are usually cheaper per unit because you avoid bagging and handling costs, but bulk requires enough storage space and a minimum order (Hello Gravel minimum is 3 tons). Bagged products offer convenience for very small projects or limited access, so weigh unit cost against convenience when choosing.
It depends on your truck size and weight limits; many full-size pickups can carry roughly 1/2 to 1 cubic yard of loose material without overloading the vehicle. Always check your truck's payload rating before hauling heavy materials and consider a delivered load if you need more than that for safety and convenience.
Dump truck sizes vary: smaller single-axle trucks often carry 4 to 6 cubic yards, while standard tri-axle trucks commonly used for deliveries carry about 10 to 12 cubic yards. Hello Gravel typically coordinates tri-axle deliveries but will confirm truck type and load size on your order confirmation.
Think about drainage needs, compaction, finish, and local climate: freeze-thaw cycles in Michigan affect base stability and drainage requirements. Choose materials that match the load and look you want and note that regional sourcing means texture and color can vary; contact our team for recommendations tailored to your project.
Select your preferred delivery date at checkout; standard delivery requires 2+ business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Prepare a clear, level drop zone with good truck access, mark any underground utilities or obstacles, and request tailgate spreading at checkout if you want the driver to consider it (it is at their discretion).
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible to request changes; modifications are easier before the order is dispatched and depend on supplier and trucking schedules. We will do our best to accommodate requests but cannot guarantee all changes after processing.
There is no single conversion because weight per cubic yard depends on the material and moisture content; for example, denser aggregates weigh more per cubic yard than loose dirt. Use Hello Gravel's online calculator or ask our team for a conversion based on the material you are ordering to estimate truck weight and cost.
Natural materials vary by region and supplier, so texture, color, and gradation may differ from photos. If the material differs significantly from your order or expectations, contact customer service promptly and we will work with the supplier to resolve the issue.
