Local Insights
Lachine is a small but active community with a population of 1,770, located within a growing West Michigan region that supports broader demand for residential and small-scale commercial building. A steady growth rate of 1.20% annually suggests ongoing home improvements and new projects rather than a boom — homeowners can expect consistent need for driveways, patios, grading, and garden upgrades. The local temperate conditions, with 228 sunny days and an annual rainfall of 34.25 inches, plus a hardiness zone of 8b, mean projects must balance sun-loving plantings with reliable drainage and soil stability. That combination makes quality bulk materials — from soils and mulches to aggregates and base stone — important for long-term performance. Choosing the right material mix helps control erosion, support planting beds, and create durable surfaces that handle both wet seasons and bright, active summers.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices vary by material type, load size, delivery distance, and site access. Hello Gravel shows zip-code pricing on the site and connects you with local suppliers for an exact quote; expect minimum orders and regional differences based on local geology and demand.
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. To convert, divide 27 by the bag volume in cubic feet (not the bag weight); if a bag only shows weight, check the manufacturer's bag volume or use our material calculator to avoid guesswork.
For most medium-size projects, bulk materials are cheaper per cubic yard than individual bags once you factor in hauling and handling. For very small projects, bagged products may be more convenient; compare the total delivered cost and the 3-ton minimum to decide which is best.
Hello Gravel partners with local haulers who may offer haul-away services depending on local availability and truck access. Request a removal quote through the site or our team; pricing depends on volume, access, and disposal requirements.
A 20x20 area at 4 inches deep requires about 5 cubic yards (400 sq ft * 4 in = 133.3 cu ft; 133.3 / 27 = 4.94 cu yd). Because of compaction and minor variances, order 5-10% extra and check minimums—truck loads and supplier minimums can affect the exact delivered amount.
Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee, subject to local supplier availability. Same-day delivery is rare and depends on local truck schedules; check the checkout calendar or contact our team for urgent needs.
Standard delivery typically requires 3 tons minimum and is scheduled in 2+ business days with optional next-day for a fee. Rural deliveries can incur extra charges for long distances, narrow or steep access, soft shoulders, or required permits; exact fees appear at checkout when you enter your zip code.
We accept orders in common units, but trucks have fixed capacities and suppliers set minimums, so exact fractions can be limited. For small precise needs, order a little extra to allow for compaction and waste, or contact customer service to see if a partial load is available in your area.
Choose based on function: look for materials that drain well for drainage projects, compact for driveways, and provide the right finish for patios or beds. Because regional sourcing affects texture and color, use our aggregate quiz or call our sales team for recommendations tailored to your project and local conditions.
Volume pricing and promotions vary by local supplier and season. Large projects often qualify for better rates—check the product pages, sign up for emails, or contact our sales team to ask about discounts and seasonal availability in your zip code.
No single image can represent every local batch; due to regional sourcing, texture and color can vary. You can note color preferences in your order notes, and our team can advise on likely local variations before you buy.
Clear the delivery area, ensure truck access and a safe turn radius, and remove obstacles like low-hanging branches or locked gates. If spreading is needed, request tailgate spreading at checkout—drivers may do it at their discretion, but there are no guarantees.
