Local Insights
Ithaca has a population of 5,180 and is experiencing steady growth at about 1.20% annually, a pace that typically drives steady demand for home improvements, landscape upgrades, and small-scale construction projects. As part of the broader West Michigan region of 2.5+ million residents, local homeowners are investing in durable outdoor spaces and practical site work rather than large, speculative developments. The local climate—with 228 sunny days annually, 34.25 inches of rainfall, and a hardiness zone of 8b—means materials must perform through alternating wet and dry conditions and support a wide range of plantings. That combination makes access to a range of quality bulk supplies important: reliable soils and amendments for planting beds, free-draining aggregates for paths and drainage, stable fills for grading, and organic mulches for moisture retention and erosion control. Ithaca’s mix of sun, rain, and a moderate growing zone creates particular performance needs for bulk materials. Soils and aggregates need to balance drainage and water retention, resist excessive compaction, and support seasonal planting cycles; in practice this means choosing materials that match site drainage patterns and intended use. For homeowners, that translates into ordering the right quantities, specifying regional material characteristics, and planning deliveries for workable conditions. Hello Gravel helps by connecting you to local suppliers and haulers, offering calculators and guidance to match materials to Ithaca’s conditions, and coordinating delivery so you get the right product when you need it.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Delivery cost depends on material type, quantity, distance from the supplier, and site access. Hello Gravel lists clear prices at checkout and requires a minimum order of 3 tons; many areas offer free delivery but fees can apply for long hauls or difficult access. Use the online quote tool or enter your zip code to see exact pricing for your address.
Calculate volume in cubic yards: length x width x depth (in feet) divided by 27, then convert to tons (most aggregates are about 1 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard depending on material). Round up 5 to 10 percent for compaction, grading, and waste, or use Hello Gravel’s material calculator for a quick estimate. Contact our team with project details if you want help double checking your numbers.
Standard delivery is 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is often available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Availability depends on local supplier schedules and your zip code, so confirm the option during checkout. We connect you with local haulers who will confirm delivery timing after your order is placed.
For small jobs or minor touchups, bagged materials from a local store can be convenient. For driveways, large patios, grading, or landscape beds you will usually save time and money ordering bulk by the ton. Bulk delivery also reduces handling and cleanup; compare totals including delivery when deciding which option is best.
For a 20 x 20 foot area at 4 inches depth, you need about 4.9 cubic yards (roughly 5 cubic yards) of base material. Convert that to tons using 1 to 1.7 tons per cubic yard depending on whether you need gravel, sand, or compacted dirt, and add 5 to 10 percent for compaction and grading. If you need both base and topping materials, plan separately for each layer.
A 10-yard delivery refers to roughly 10 cubic yards of material loaded in a truck; depending on material density that equals roughly 10 to 17 tons. It is a good choice for medium-size projects like long driveways, raised beds, or larger patios where multiple cubic yards are needed. Before ordering, confirm your driveway and site can accommodate a dump truck and note any access restrictions in your order notes.
Because Hello Gravel sources materials regionally, color, texture, and particle size can vary naturally between batches and suppliers. Photos and samples are representative, but exact matches are not guaranteed; you can add color or texture preferences in the order notes to help locate the best match. If something looks significantly different, contact customer service and we will work to resolve it.
Drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion and when it can be done safely, but this service is not guaranteed. You can request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess the site upon arrival. For planned spreading, consider hiring a local landscaper or contractor and note this need in your order so the delivery team is aware.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible with your order number; changes are easiest before the order is dispatched to the hauler. We will do our best to accommodate date, quantity, or material changes, but modifications are subject to supplier and truck schedules. If you need help, call or text our team with your zip code and project details.
We deliver with professional dump truck fleets, typically tri-axle trucks, but access limitations can affect where the load can be dropped. If you have a narrow road, overhead wires, soft ground, or long carry distances, add notes and photos at checkout so we can advise about risks, additional fees, or alternative drop locations. Our team will coordinate with the local hauler to find the safest and most cost-effective delivery plan.
