Local Insights
Holland is home to 88,343 residents and sits within a growing West Michigan region of 2.5+ million people. A steady growth rate of 1.20% annually means ongoing demand for new home builds, additions, and landscape upgrades rather than a sudden boom—homeowners are gradually investing in durable yards and long-term projects. Holland's climate, with 228/year sunny days and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, favors materials that balance drainage and moisture retention: well-graded base materials for stable driveways, topsoil and compost for gardens, and mulches or erosion-control blends for slopes. In this environment, quality bulk materials matter because they determine how well paths, patios, planting beds, and drainage systems perform across seasons. Local construction and landscaping trends show a preference for lower-maintenance designs and storm-ready yards that handle occasional heavy rain without sacrificing aesthetics. That means homeowners increasingly prioritize properly compacted bases, permeable surfaces where appropriate, and locally sourced aggregates that reflect regional geology. Choosing the right mix of materials helps reduce long-term maintenance, prevent erosion, and support healthy planting beds—making material selection a practical, long-term decision for Holland properties.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by matching material performance to use: consider traffic, required drainage, and desired look. Think about how regional freeze-thaw and snow removal in West Michigan affect durability and maintenance, and compare options in terms of compaction and permeability. Use our material calculator and consult with our team to pick the right gravel, sand, dirt, stone mix for your driveway or path.
Consider drainage needs, plant type, and desired appearance when selecting materials; some mixes provide better moisture control while others are primarily decorative. Factor in how materials behave through seasons in Holland, and whether you need a weed barrier or edging to keep materials in place. We can help you choose the right gravel, sand, dirt, stone combination for long-term performance and look.
Freeze-thaw cycles can cause settling and movement in poorly compacted or fine materials, so choose mixes that handle freeze-thaw and shed water well. Snowplowing and salt use can scatter or break down some surfaces, so consider durability and maintenance needs when selecting materials. Our local suppliers provide regional mixes of gravel, sand, dirt, stone suited to West Michigan conditions.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth of the area to calculate volume, then convert to tons using a material calculator or our online tool. For many small projects, plan for the site depth commonly used for walkways, beds, or base layers and account for compaction and waste. Orders must meet our minimum of 3 tons, so check the calculator and reach out if you need help with a custom estimate for gravel, sand, dirt, stone.
Standard delivery is 2+ business days, with next-day delivery available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee; choose your preferred date at checkout. Our minimum order is 3 tons and materials are delivered by local contracted dump truck fleets, usually tri-axle trucks. Tailgate spreading may be available at the driver's discretion; please request it at checkout but note it is not guaranteed for gravel, sand, dirt, stone deliveries.
We show transparent pricing up front, and many local deliveries include free delivery depending on distance and supplier arrangements. Long hauls, tight access, or next-day requests may add fees; contractors can discuss bulk pricing options with our sales team. Check your zip code and cart for an exact quote on gravel, sand, dirt, stone delivery costs.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion and only if it can be done safely at the site. Request spreading at checkout and note that the driver will assess conditions on arrival; this service is not guaranteed. If spreading is critical, plan with a local contractor after delivery of gravel, sand, dirt, stone.
Small landscaping projects often do not require permits, but larger changes like new driveways, curb cuts, or changes to drainage may. Check Holland city codes and any HOA rules before ordering, and obtain permits if required to avoid fines or rework. If you are unsure, contact the local building department and tell your supplier you are in Holland so they can advise on common local requirements for gravel, sand, dirt, stone projects.
Clear the drop zone of obstacles, remove fragile landscaping, and create a level area with good truck access; a hard surface helps heavy trucks avoid getting stuck. Call 811 to mark underground utilities before digging or grading, and mark preferred delivery spots with flags or cones. Preparing the site in advance makes receipt and spreading of gravel, sand, dirt, stone easier and safer.
Base your decision on the project's function: for drainage choose more open, granular mixes; for compaction and stability pick well-graded, angular materials; for appearance focus on color and texture. Consider maintenance, local climate, and budget when weighing options, and ask for local samples since regional sourcing causes variation. Our team can walk you through trade-offs for gravel, sand, dirt, stone to match performance and look to your needs.
