Local Insights
Bellaire is a small but active community of 3,870 residents where steady expansion—at about 1.20% annual growth—translates into a consistent need for residential and light commercial work. Being part of a West Michigan region that feeds a larger metro economy of 2.5+ million, even modest population increases drive demand for driveway repairs, yard renovations, new garden beds, and small additions. With 228 sunny days a year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, outdoor projects are often feasible across seasons, yet they must account for both dry periods and substantial runoff. In that context, quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, stone, and base mixes—matter because they determine drainage performance, structural stability, and long-term maintenance needs. Homeowners benefit from materials that match local grading and compaction needs and from clear guidance on quantities and delivery timing.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices for gravel, sand, dirt, stone and other aggregates vary by material type, quantity, distance from the supplier, and local availability. Hello Gravel provides transparent per-yard or per-ton pricing on checkout and shows delivery fees up front; use our material calculator or request a quote for an exact price. Keep in mind our minimum order is 3 tons and standard delivery is 2+ business days, with a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST (additional fee may apply).
One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet and typically covers about 100 square feet at a 3-inch depth, so 5 cubic yards will cover roughly 500 to 540 square feet at that depth. Whether 5 yards is enough depends on the project depth and area; measure the area, decide on the target depth, and use area*depth/27 to calculate cubic yards or use our online calculator. Contact our team for help matching coverage to common Bellaire projects and material choices.
A 20x20 slab is 400 square feet, and basic base material needs commonly range from 4 to 6 inches depending on soil and use; at 4 inches that equals about 5 cubic yards of base (400*(4/12)/27). Material cost is only part of the total: include site prep, compaction, reinforcement, concrete, labor, permits, and disposal. For an accurate overall budget in Bellaire's climate, get a local contractor estimate and an aggregate quote from Hello Gravel for the base materials.
Many of our local suppliers can deliver larger truckloads, including common 10-yard loads, but availability depends on local fleet and site access. Hello Gravel coordinates delivery with local haulers (typically tri-axle dump trucks) and requires a minimum order of 3 tons; request a quote and specify delivery constraints so we can confirm truck size and placement options. Note that tailgate spreading is available only at the driver's discretion and is not guaranteed.
Buying materials in bulk is often more cost-effective on a per-unit basis because unit pricing and hauling are reduced, especially for medium and large projects. Factor in storage space, site access, potential delivery fees, and whether you need screened or screened/processed material. Use Hello Gravel quotes to compare bulk pricing vs small bags and consider regional sourcing that affects color and texture in West Michigan.
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet and may physically fit in many full-size pickup beds, but weight can be substantial depending on moisture and material type. Always check your truck's payload capacity and local road or bridge weight limits before hauling; for safety and convenience in Bellaire many homeowners opt for delivery. If you decide to use a pickup, load less than the truck's rated capacity and secure the load.
Dump trucks come in different sizes; common loads for local haulers range from about 6 to 16 cubic yards depending on the truck. Hello Gravel works with local fleets, and pricing may be quoted by the cubic yard or by the ton depending on regional supplier practices and material density. When you request a quote, tell us the desired quantity and placement so we can match the right truck and give clear pricing for Bellaire deliveries.
Start with the function: think about drainage, load-bearing needs, finished look, and maintenance. For structural bases and surfaces consider options from the gravel, sand, dirt, stone group for drainage and compaction; lighter decorative surfaces may use a different size or finish. Local climate and freeze-thaw cycles in West Michigan matter, so use our aggregate quiz or call our team for recommendations tailored to your project and site conditions.
Measure the area in square feet, choose the desired depth in feet, then use area * depth / 27 to get cubic yards (for example, 200 sq ft at 3 inches = 200*(0.25)/27 ≈ 1.85 cubic yards). For projects requiring weight-based estimates, convert cubic yards to tons using the material density or ask our team for help. You can also use Hello Gravel's online calculator or contact our sales team for a quick estimate for Bellaire projects.
Expect a professional dump truck delivery arranged by Hello Gravel; standard delivery is scheduled for 2+ business days with a next-day option available for orders placed before noon CST (additional fee may apply). Make sure there is clear access, a defined drop area, and that you note any underground utilities or obstacles in the order notes; drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion but it is not guaranteed. If anything changes, contact our customer service as soon as possible so we can help adjust placement or timing.
