Local Insights
Ann Arbor Township's population of 435 sits inside a much larger, fast-growing metro ecosystem of 2.5+ million people. That steady 0.80% annual growth translates into ongoing demand for residential upgrades, infill projects, and infrastructure maintenance — all of which increase the need for reliable bulk materials. With 228 sunny days a year, 34.25 inches of annual rainfall, and placement in hardiness zone 8b, local projects balance dry-season work with attention to stormwater and seasonal moisture. For homeowners that means choosing materials that manage drainage, resist displacement during rain events, and support plantings suited to zone 8b. Whether you are preparing a driveway, improving yard grading, or refreshing garden beds, quality bulk supplies—dirt, sand, mulch, stone, and aggregates—reduce rework and help projects last through the seasonal cycles common to this region.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Standard delivery is usually 2+ business days from order, with a next-day option for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Hello Gravel works with local haulers using dump trucks and requires a minimum order of about 3 tons; exact timing and minimums may vary by supplier in the Ann Arbor area.
Choose materials based on function: base layers need stability and drainage, while top layers prioritize appearance and walkability. Because local geology affects texture and color, consider material performance in freeze-thaw cycles, drainage needs, and the look you want before ordering gravel, sand, dirt, or stone.
Materials that drain well and resist shifting tend to perform better in freeze-thaw climates like Ann Arbor: well-graded aggregates for base layers and angular crushed stone for stability are common choices. Top-layer selection depends on use and aesthetics, and adding proper drainage and compaction is more important than any single material.
Peak demand is typically spring through early fall, so prices can be higher and lead times longer during that period. Late fall and winter can offer lower demand and sometimes better pricing, but deliveries may be slower or limited by weather and site access due to snow and frozen ground.
Yes. Zoning, permits, and HOA rules can affect driveway surfacing, drainage requirements, and where trucks can dump materials. Always check local ordinances and any HOA guidelines before ordering, and disclose permit needs or restricted delivery locations when you place your order.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide the depth in inches, then convert cubic feet to cubic yards and to tons using a material-specific conversion. Hello Gravel's material calculator and customer support can help estimate quantities, but experienced contractors often confirm with a site measurement to allow for compaction and waste.
Yes. Narrow streets, low-hanging wires, steep driveways, cul-de-sacs, and weight limits on residential roads can limit truck access or where drivers can safely dump. Provide clear access notes at checkout, photograph tight approaches if needed, and expect drivers to assess safety on arrival; tailgate spreading is available at their discretion.
Plan for positive drainage away from structures by grading and using permeable base materials where appropriate; poor drainage accelerates freeze-thaw damage. Compaction for base layers improves stability, while loose top layers may require different maintenance schedules; consider professional installation for driveways and load-bearing surfaces.
Yes. Minimum orders, bulk pricing, and discount thresholds vary by local supplier and haul distance. Hello Gravel's marketplace typically lists minimums (around 3 tons) and shows pricing upfront, but you can also ask suppliers about volume discounts for larger projects.
Longevity depends on material choice, installation quality, and site conditions: properly installed base layers and good drainage extend life across materials. Expect seasonal maintenance such as regrading, topping up, and clearing snow or ice; freeze-thaw cycles may require more frequent attention to surface materials.
Provide a clear delivery address, preferred drop location, any driveway or access limitations, and whether you want the driver to consider tailgate spreading. Also note permit requirements, street parking rules, and a phone number for contact; the driver will make the final safety decision on placement and spreading.
