Local Insights
Hyattsville is a growing suburban community with a city population of 147,026 and easy access to a metro area of 2.5+ million. Its measured growth rate of 0.40% annually points to steady, incremental development rather than a construction boom — that usually means consistent demand for renovations, infill projects, and yard upgrades rather than large-scale new subdivisions. In Hyattsville's Hardiness Zone 8b, with about 228/year sunny days and 34.32 inches of annual rainfall, homeowners and contractors prioritize materials that manage both occasional heavy rain and long sunny spells. That mix drives interest in well-graded base materials for patios and driveways, durable topsoils and planting mixes for beds, and aggregates that support drainage and erosion control. Across residential projects, reliable bulk supplies—gravel, dirt, sand, mulch, and stone—help ensure long-term performance, appearance, and low maintenance in this specific regional context.

Price : Great Punctuality : Great Communication : middling - I tried to help by telling them driver would have to turn around in cul-de-sac and reverse to sire. I even sat in cul-de-sac to flag them in. Driver flew by. Their fuel, but comms need improvement.

Common residential projects include driveways, patios and walkways, backyard drainage fixes, erosion control, raised beds, and grading or topsoil for lawns. Contractors also order bulk materials for foundation backfill and site prep on larger builds. These tasks often call for a mix of gravel, sand, dirt, and stone depending on function and finish.
Start by defining the purpose: drainage, structural base, finish surface, or topsoil. Then pick materials that match that purpose—materials for load-bearing bases differ from those for planting or surface topping. If you're unsure, use our aggregate quiz or contact our team for guidance based on your project and local conditions.
Hyattsville's climate includes freeze-thaw cycles, hot humid summers, and heavy rain events that affect settling and drainage. Choose materials that drain well for wet seasons and that resist frost heave where freeze-thaw is a concern. Plan deliveries and installations in spring, summer, or early fall when ground conditions are more stable and access is easier.
Many Hyattsville yards have compacted fill or clay-rich soils that slow drainage and may require amended soil or a drainage layer. For projects that affect runoff or grading, consider materials that improve permeability and plan for proper slope away from structures. If you suspect widespread drainage problems, consult a local contractor or soil test before ordering large quantities.
Permit requirements vary by project scope and location; simple surface repairs often do not need permits while structural changes, curb cuts, or work in public right-of-way usually do. Check with Prince George's County and Hyattsville municipal offices before starting work, and confirm any utility or right-of-way restrictions. If your project affects public sidewalks or curb lines, obtaining permits and inspections may be required.
Deliveries are made by contracted dump trucks, typically tri-axle, and access can be limited by narrow streets, parked cars, or low-hanging wires in some neighborhoods. Provide detailed delivery notes at checkout, make space for truck turning, and clear obstacles or vehicles on the scheduled day. Drivers will assess safety on arrival; tailgate spreading may be offered at their discretion but is not guaranteed.
Hello Gravel's minimum order is 3 tons. Standard delivery typically requires 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Seasonal demand and local supplier schedules can increase lead time, so plan ahead for peak landscaping months.
Mark the drop location clearly and remove vehicles or obstacles from the access route and street. Protect nearby landscaping and hardscapes by laying plywood or boards if the truck must drive over delicate areas, and confirm the driver can safely place the load where needed. Communicate special access details in Order Notes so the hauler can plan appropriately.
Freeze-thaw cycles and road salt can affect aggregate and soil performance; choose materials that are dense and well-draining for base layers to reduce frost heave. For surfaces, pick materials with proven durability under freeze-thaw and avoid mixes that retain excess moisture. If you expect winter installation, allow for shorter work windows and check for frozen ground conditions.
Use simple volume calculations (length x width x depth) to estimate cubic yards, then convert to tons using our online calculator or the material calculator on the site. For driveways and bases, plan for a bit of overage to account for compaction and grading. If you prefer help, contact our team with project dimensions and we'll assist with estimates.
Contact Hello Gravel customer service promptly and we will work to resolve the issue and coordinate with the supplier. We recommend photographing the delivery and keeping notes to speed up resolution. Review our refund and issue policies for details, and expect us to help identify replacement material or next steps when feasible.
