Local Insights
Portland is a compact, active city with a city population of 81,035 and a broader metro area population of 2.3+ million, and its measured growth of 0.40% annually points to steady, incremental demand for residential and commercial work rather than a construction boom. That measured growth means homeowners are more likely to tackle renovation, landscaping, and small-scale infill projects over time, creating consistent need for quality bulk materials. Portland’s temperate coastal climate—with 228 sunny days, about 34.00 inches of annual rainfall, and a hardiness zone of 8b—shapes what materials perform best: anything used outdoors must balance drainage, freeze-thaw durability, and salt exposure near the shore. Homeowners and contractors should expect to source a range of supplies—gravel, sand, topsoil, fill dirt, mulch, and stone—to address erosion control, base layers for hardscapes, planting beds, and driveway stabilization in this environment.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Choose based on load, drainage, and maintenance needs rather than appearance alone. For Portland's climate, pick materials that drain well and resist breakup from freeze–thaw and coastal salt exposure; a stable base plus a wearing surface suited to traffic level usually works best. If unsure, use our material quiz or contact our team for guidance on options like gravel, sand, dirt, and stone that fit your project.
Standard delivery typically requires at least 2 business days, and next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Minimum orders start at 3 tons, and materials are delivered by contracted dump truck fleets (often tri-axle). Tailgate spreading can sometimes be performed at the driver's discretion if requested at checkout, but it is not guaranteed.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide on the required depth in inches, then convert to cubic yards by multiplying area (sq ft) by depth (in) and dividing by 324. Convert cubic yards to tons as needed using a material-specific density or use our online calculator for a quick estimate. If you prefer, send dimensions to our team and we can help verify quantities.
Yes. Winters and stormy periods can limit deliveries and site access, while spring and summer are peak seasons with higher demand and longer lead times. Coastal salt and sand demand can spike in winter, so plan ahead and check availability for your zip code. Ordering early and selecting a preferred delivery date in checkout helps lock in a slot.
Ensure clear truck access, a stable drop zone, and no low overhead obstructions; mark exactly where you want the load placed. Avoid placing heavy trucks on soft lawns or recently seeded areas, and be aware that some streets have weight or parking restrictions that may require a permit. Communication with the driver and including site notes at checkout improves the delivery experience.
Possibly. Many municipalities require permits, curb cuts, or setback compliance for new driveways or expansions, so check Portland's local codes or consult a contractor before starting work. We can deliver materials to your site, but you should verify any municipal requirements and secure permits before installation begins.
Deliveries are most commonly made by tri-axle dump trucks, which carry larger loads and reduce the number of trips for big projects. Smaller local trucks are sometimes used for tight-access sites; neighborhood weight limits or seasonal road restrictions may apply. If your street has weight limits or narrow access, note that in your order so we can coordinate an appropriate truck.
Freeze–thaw cycles can cause fine materials to shift and settle, so choose materials and construction methods that promote drainage and resist movement. In coastal locations, consider materials that tolerate salt exposure and avoid mixes that break down quickly under repeated wetting and drying. Proper base preparation, slope for drainage, and occasional maintenance reduce climate-related problems.
Some local suppliers or contractors offer installation, compaction, and site-prep services, but Hello Gravel primarily coordinates material delivery through local haulers. Tailgate spreading may be offered at the driver's discretion if requested at checkout, but it is not guaranteed. For compaction and professional installation, we recommend hiring a licensed contractor experienced with local conditions.
Prices vary by material type, quantity, supplier, and season, so per-cubic-yard and per-ton costs can differ widely. Use our online quote tool or request a quote for transparent, location-specific pricing and any applicable delivery fees. We often show delivery costs upfront and can explain how order size and delivery options affect the final price.
Key concerns include drainage, erosion control on slopes, freeze–thaw stability, and salt tolerance in coastal areas. Also consider long-term maintenance, color and texture preferences that match your property, and whether the material compacts or shifts under traffic. Discussing the site conditions with our team helps match the right combination of materials to your needs.
Contact our customer service team as soon as possible; changes are easier before an order is processed or dispatched. We will make a best effort to accommodate modifications, but once a truck is scheduled or materials are loaded, some changes may not be possible. See our order and refund policies for details or call us for help with specific situations.
