Local Insights
Lewiston has a city population of 29,781 and sits within a broader metro area population of 2.3+ million, with steady measured growth at 0.40% annually. That kind of gradual expansion tends to drive consistent demand for home improvements and modest construction projects rather than boom-scale development, so homeowners can expect ongoing needs for driveways, drainage upgrades, landscape rebuilds, and small foundation and hardscape work. With a climate that averages 228 sunny days and an annual rainfall of 34.00 inches in a Hardiness Zone of 8b, materials have to balance durability with drainage and plant compatibility. Quality bulk materials—including gravel, sand, topsoil, mulch, and stone—matter here because they directly affect drainage performance, frost resistance, compaction behavior, and landscape longevity in local soils and seasonal conditions. Lewiston’s mix of seasonal precipitation and temperate growing conditions creates specific challenges: soils that compact when wet, spring thaw and occasional freeze-thaw cycles, and the need to manage runoff on sloped lots. Those local conditions influence which aggregates perform best for base layers, which soils need amendment, and where erosion-control products are necessary. Hello Gravel helps homeowners navigate those choices by connecting them with locally sourced materials, offering quantity calculators and scheduling options, and providing guidance so buyers can match materials to Lewiston’s specific climate, soil behavior, and steady construction needs.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Prices vary by material type, local supply, delivery distance, and season. Hello Gravel lists clear pricing during checkout for your zip code (Lewiston, ME 04240), with a minimum order of 3 tons; contact our team for a customized quote. Delivery fees, next-day options, and any spreading services will affect the final cost.
Material costs depend on type and density, so prices are usually shown per ton or per cubic yard on our site. Use our material calculator to convert between cubic yards and tons (density varies by material), and check checkout pricing for your Lewiston zip code to see current local rates and delivery fees.
Calculate area (length x width) and choose a target depth, then use the formula: cubic yards = (area in sq ft x depth in inches) / 324. Convert cubic yards to tons using a density estimate (typical range 1.2–1.6 tons per cubic yard depending on material). For example, assuming 1.3 tons per cubic yard, 20 tons is about 15 cubic yards — at 2u0022 depth that would cover roughly 2,400 sq ft; depths and material choice will change that estimate.
Consider drainage, freeze-thaw cycles, and how you’ll use the area: base layers for driveways need durable, well-graded material for compaction, while top dressing needs finer, organic-rich material. Because Hello Gravel sources regionally, materials in Lewiston reflect local geology, so pick materials that resist frost heave and drain well, and ask our team for recommendations based on your project.
One cubic yard covers about 100–162 sq ft depending on desired depth (for example, about 100 sq ft at 3u0022 depth or about 162 sq ft at 2u0022 depth). Exact coverage varies with how much settling you expect and whether you are mixing with existing soil, so measure your area and use the material calculator for a more precise quantity.
Most tri-axle dump trucks used by our partners carry roughly 10–12 cubic yards of loose material, but actual volume depends on truck type and material density. Hello Gravel displays minimum order sizes and will confirm the exact truck and load size when you order for Lewiston.
Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for many areas, for an additional fee, subject to local supplier and truck availability. Standard delivery is typically 2+ business days; you can choose a preferred delivery date during checkout and we’ll confirm scheduling.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion; you can request this service at checkout but there are no guarantees. The driver will assess access, safety, and the feasibility of spreading when they arrive.
Material price is only one part of the total: labor, site preparation, base materials, compaction, permits, and any drainage work add to the cost. Hello Gravel supplies and delivers bulk materials (gravel, sand, dirt, stone) — for installation pricing, use our quantity estimates and get local contractor quotes to include labor and finishing costs.
Contact our team as soon as possible; changes are easier before an order is processed and dispatched. We’ll do our best to accommodate modifications, but flexibility depends on supplier and trucking schedules, so earlier notice gives the best chance of a change.
