Local Insights
Hodgdon is a small community with a city population of 1,000, yet it benefits from being part of a larger regional economy with a metro area population of 603,000. A growth rate of 0.50% annually points to modest, steady development rather than rapid expansion — that translates into consistent demand for homeowner projects like driveways, drainage upgrades, garden regrading, and small additions rather than large-scale construction. Local climate and geography shape material choices: 47.00 inches of annual rainfall, 215 sunny days per year, and a hardiness zone of 7b mean frequent moisture management, seasonally variable soils, and an active growing season. In this setting, reliable bulk supplies of gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone matter because they determine drainage performance, compaction behavior, and landscape longevity across many common projects.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start by defining the project's purpose (drainage, surface, base, or landscaping look) and the performance you need (stability, permeability, or appearance). Consider local conditions in Hodgdon like freeze-thaw cycles and wet springs, then match a material that handles those conditions. If you need help, use Hello Gravel's material quiz or contact our team for recommendations based on typical local suppliers.
Price depends on the type of material, the quantity ordered, and delivery distance from the local supplier. Site access, seasonal demand, and any requested services (like spreading) can add fees. For an accurate estimate, get a quote on our website and check your zip code for local rates and available delivery windows.
Cold winters and freeze-thaw cycles in Hodgdon favor materials that drain well and resist frost heave; consider options that provide stability and quick drainage. Wet springs mean finer materials can wash or compact more, so choose materials suited to seasonal wetness and local grading. Local suppliers source materials that reflect regional geology, so expect some variation in texture and color.
Plan for proper slope, separation layers, and drainage paths to move water away from structures and prevent erosion during spring thaw. Use materials that promote infiltration where needed and avoid fine, easily eroded fills on steep slopes without geotextile or retaining measures. If your site drains to a roadside or wetland, check local regulations before altering drainage patterns.
Measure the area (length, width, depth) in feet and convert to cubic yards, then use a material calculator to convert cubic yards to tons for ordering. Hello Gravel's online calculator and sales team can help when you enter your project dimensions and desired depth. For small projects note our minimum order is 3 tons, so plan accordingly.
Standard delivery typically requires at least 2 business days, and next-day delivery may be available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Deliveries are made by contracted dump truck fleets, and scheduling options are shown at checkout after you enter your zip code. We confirm delivery details in advance, but exact arrival times can vary with weather and road conditions.
Clear a path for the truck with at least one-way access and notify us of low overhead lines, narrow gates, or tight turns so we can advise the hauler. Mark your preferred drop area with visible stakes or flags and remove obstacles like lawn furniture or trailer ramps. Avoid soft ground during spring thaw when trucks can get stuck, and provide a stable staging area if you need precise placement.
Drivers may be able to perform basic tailgate spreading at their discretion, but this depends on site conditions and safety. Request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess if it can be done safely upon arrival. We do not guarantee spreading services, so plan for additional labor if you need finished grades or detailed placement.
Permit requirements vary by project and location; small landscaping fills often do not require permits, but larger deposits, work near wetlands, or material that affects stormwater may. Contact the Town of Hodgdon office and check state environmental rules for shoreland or wetland protections before ordering large quantities. When in doubt, our team recommends checking local codes or consulting with a contractor familiar with regional permitting.
Compare materials based on durability, drainage, maintenance, and cost rather than by name alone. For driveways consider load-bearing ability and frost resistance; for paths and landscaped beds consider appearance, compaction, and permeability. Ask for advice on typical local choices so you can weigh appearance and performance against price and upkeep needs.
No—natural materials reflect regional geology, so color, texture, and gradation can vary by supplier and location. Photos are representative; you can request a sample or note color preferences in Order Notes to help suppliers match your expectations. If the material seems inconsistent with your order, contact customer service and we will work to address the issue.
Contact Hello Gravel as soon as possible—changes are easiest before the order is processed or dispatched. We will do our best to accommodate modifications, but the ability to change or cancel depends on processing status and supplier/hauler schedules. If you need to alter delivery details, call or text our team and include your order number and zip code for fastest help.
