Local Insights
Overland Park (population 178,056) sits inside a metro area of 2.3+ million and is experiencing modest, steady expansion at roughly 0.40% annually. That steady growth tends to create reliable, continual demand for residential upgrades, landscaping refreshes, and incremental infrastructure work rather than sudden construction booms. In a temperate setting with an annual rainfall of 33.50 inches, about 152 sunny days per year, and a gardening hardiness zone of 8b, homeowners need materials that balance drainage, moisture retention, and durability. Reliable bulk supplies — gravel, sand, dirt, stone, mulch, and topsoil — play different roles across projects from driveway bases and drainage swales to planting beds and erosion control. Choosing quality, regionally sourced materials helps projects perform through seasonal swings and reduces long-term maintenance in established neighborhoods and new builds alike.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Cost depends on material type, load size, and delivery distance. In the Kansas City area, many common aggregates fall in a broad range of roughly $30 to $75 per cubic yard; a typical 10-yard load often ranges from about $300 to $750 before taxes and fees. Exact pricing is available with an instant quote on our site once you enter your zip code and material choice.
Standard delivery is 2+ business days from order, and you can choose your preferred delivery date during checkout. Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. While you can select a date, exact arrival windows are not guaranteed.
Materials are typically delivered by dump truck (often tri-axle) and dumped at the agreed location subject to truck access. If access is restricted, drivers may use smaller trucks, offload to the street, or suggest alternate drop points; tailgate spreading or use of a loader is at the driver’s discretion and depends on site conditions. Let us know about tight access in Order Notes so the supplier can plan ahead.
Hello Gravel has a minimum order of 3 tons and delivery fees vary by distance, material weight, and local supplier pricing. Many areas qualify for free delivery, but some addresses will incur a delivery charge shown in your instant quote. Enter your zip code to see specific fees for Overland Park and nearby Kansas City neighborhoods.
For large areas like 1,000 sq ft, bulk materials are usually more cost-effective because they eliminate the per-bag markup and reduce handling time. Total cost depends on the desired depth, material type, and whether you need delivery, spreading, or removal of old material. Use our material calculator to compare quantities and cost, and factor in storage and labor if you plan to handle bagged products yourself.
Recommended depth depends on your driveway type and expected traffic; a common approach is a compacted base of several inches with a 3 to 6 inch compacted top layer for the wearing surface. Two inches is usually too shallow for a driveway that will see regular vehicle traffic and can lead to rutting or displacement. Consider local freeze-thaw cycles and soil conditions in Overland Park when planning depth and base prep.
Some local suppliers offer material-only pickup, but availability varies by supplier and location; check your zip code on our site or contact our team. Hello Gravel coordinates material delivery but does not provide installation labor; however, we can help connect you with local contractors for installation estimates. If you need both materials and labor, request details at checkout or contact customer service for recommendations.
Choice depends on purpose: well-graded crushed stone or compactable mixes work well for driveways, finer screened materials suit garden beds and pathways, and coarser stone is useful for drainage. Think about drainage needs, stability under traffic, and the look you want; regional sourcing means color and texture will reflect local geology around Overland Park. If unsure, use our aggregate quiz or contact our sales team for personalized recommendations.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide on the desired depth in inches, then convert to cubic yards: (area in sq ft x depth in inches) / 324. Account for compaction and waste by adding 5 to 10 percent extra for most projects. You can also use our online material calculator to get an instant estimate and recommended order quantity.
Natural materials vary by region, so color and texture may differ from photos; if you have concerns, contact customer service as soon as possible and provide photos. We will work with the supplier to resolve the issue in line with our policies; see our refund policy for details. Prompt communication helps us address problems quickly and find a satisfactory solution.
