Local Insights
Madison has a population of 1,070 and sits within a broader metro that includes 2.5+ million residents, with steady expansion at about 0.40% annually. That modest, predictable growth usually translates to measured construction demand—enough work to keep local contractors and suppliers active without the volatility of a boom market—so homeowners can plan projects with reasonable expectations for material availability and pricing. Madison’s climate (hardiness zone 8b, 228 sunny days per year, and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall) favors materials and approaches that balance sun exposure with periodic precipitation: durable topsoil and compost blends for plantings, permeable base materials to handle runoff, and UV-resistant surfacing for exposed areas. In this context, versatile bulk materials—gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone—are practical choices because they address erosion control, drainage, and long-term durability across seasons.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners in Madison typically order a mix of gravel, sand, dirt, stone for driveways, garden beds, drainage swales, and fill. These materials serve different roles—structural base, surface dressing, drainage media, or topsoil—so pick the one that fits load, appearance, and drainage needs.
Choose based on load-bearing needs, drainage performance, and final appearance: a stable base for driveways, well-draining mixes for swales, and finer materials for planting beds. Consider local climate and soil conditions in Madison, KS, and use our material calculator or contact our team for tailored suggestions.
Measure the project area and desired depth, then convert to cubic yards using: (length x width x depth in feet) / 27 = cubic yards. Convert cubic yards to tons using density estimates or our online calculator, and contact our team if you need help estimating for your project.
Minimum orders start at 3 tons, with standard delivery typically taking 2+ business days. Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee, and rural or difficult-access deliveries may incur extra charges—check your zip code at checkout for exact pricing.
Plan deliveries at least several business days ahead, and allow extra time in busy seasons like spring and early fall. If you need next-day service, place your order before noon CST and expect an additional fee; rural dropoffs can require more lead time.
Yes, our contracted tri-axle dump trucks commonly serve rural and farm addresses, but access is important: confirm gate width, overhead wires, soft entrances, and private road conditions before delivery. Add access notes at checkout so suppliers and drivers can plan, and remember tailgate spreading is at the driver's discretion.
Local county or state roads may have weight or seasonal restrictions that affect heavy truck access, and some crossings or municipalities require permits for material deliveries. Check with Madison city or county public works and let our team know if special permits or escorts might be needed.
Freeze/thaw cycles, heavy rains, and muddy conditions can impact compaction and spreading, while hot dry periods may create dust during delivery. Choose materials that match drainage needs for your site and schedule deliveries during drier windows to reduce handling problems.
Raw material is delivered as-is on the truck; installation-ready material has been processed, screened, or blended for immediate use and may include additional handling or spreading. Installation-ready options cost more but can reduce on-site labor and equipment needs.
Natural materials vary by region, so color and texture may differ from photos; contact our customer service as soon as possible for order changes or concerns. We will work with you and the supplier to resolve issues, but modifications are easier before the order is dispatched.
Bulk materials are generally sold as-is with limited warranties; return and refund policies vary by supplier. Check the supplier terms shown at checkout and contact our team promptly if there is a delivery problem so we can help coordinate a satisfactory resolution.
