Local Insights
Merrillville is home to 32,541 residents and is experiencing steady, modest expansion with a growth rate of 0.40% annually. That kind of measured growth usually means steady demand for home improvements, not a building boom — homeowners and local contractors focus on targeted upgrades like better drainage, durable driveways, and outdoor living spaces rather than rapid subdivision growth. The local climate and geography (228/year sunny days and 33.50 inches annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b) favor projects that balance water management with UV and weather resistance. For Merrillville homeowners, quality bulk materials — gravel, sand, dirt, stone, mulch, and other aggregates — matter because well-chosen materials control water flow, reduce maintenance, and extend the life of patios, paths, and driveways in this regional environment.

While I cannot speak to the actual service, I did enter my phone number to get a quote. I realized it was probably too much for my small project. But I received a very helpful follow up text conversation, and after I explained it was probably more than I needed, they still took time to help me work through how much I would need, and offered me possible solutions, even knowing I wouldn't be using their product. Makes me wish they had fit my needs, if that's the level of service they provided even to a non customers

Customers in Merrillville commonly order a mix of materials for yards and jobs: gravel, sand, dirt, and stone. These materials are used for driveways, base layers, grading, drainage, and landscaping accents, and local suppliers stock mixes that suit area soils and climate.
Choose materials based on the function you need: structural base work, drainage, or surface appearance. For load-bearing areas pick denser aggregates; for drainage pick more open-graded materials; for top layers pick size and color that match the look you want—our quiz and sales team can help narrow options.
In Merrillville's climate, materials that drain well and resist frost heave tend to perform best, so well-graded aggregates and coarse mixes are common choices. Regional sourcing means suppliers already select mixes suited to local freeze-thaw cycles, but adding proper compaction and a geotextile can improve long-term performance.
Spring through early fall is the easiest window for most deliveries and installs because ground is unfrozen and access is better after winter. Late fall and winter deliveries are possible but may face delays from freeze-thaw conditions and wet or frozen ground; plan extra time and ask about staging and storage on site.
Many small landscaping projects do not require city permits, but driveway work that changes curb cuts or drainage can need permits, and some homeowner associations have rules about exterior materials and visible surfaces. Check Merrillville municipal ordinances and your HOA guidelines before ordering, or contact our sales team for guidance.
Delivery logistics matter: end-dump trucks need room to back up and tilt, while side-dump or smaller trucks can be better for tight access. Tell us about narrow driveways, low branches, steep grades, or underground utilities when ordering so we can match the right truck and avoid delays.
Next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for many areas near Merrillville, subject to supplier and fleet availability. Same-day delivery may be possible in some cases but is not guaranteed; contact our team early to check options for your zip code.
Measure the length, width, and desired depth of the area in feet, multiply to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards—then add 5-10% for waste or compaction. Use Hello Gravel's material calculator or contact our team with project details and we can estimate quantities and recommend depths for common projects.
Price depends on material type, order size, distance from local supplier, and trucking logistics. Hello Gravel shows transparent pricing during checkout; minimum orders start at 3 tons and delivery timing, access needs, or spreading requests can change the final cost.
Many Merrillville residents can take inert materials to local transfer stations or recycling centers that accept concrete and asphalt for crushing and reuse. For large volumes, contractors or haulers can coordinate removal and recycling—contact municipal public works for local disposal rules and recycling options.
Clear the drop area of vehicles, lawn furniture, and low-hanging branches, and mark any private lines or utilities to keep the delivery safe and smooth. Make sure ground is accessible for a dump truck and set expectations for tailgate spreading (driver discretion), and tell us about any tight spots when ordering so we can match the right truck.
