Local Insights
Decatur has a population of 17,470, and its modest annual growth rate of 0.40% points to steady, manageable demand for home improvement and incremental development rather than a construction boom. With 228 sunny days per year and 33.50 inches of annual rainfall in hardiness zone 8b, homeowners benefit from a long working season but still need materials that balance drainage and durability. Local trends—such as stabilizing driveways, building low-maintenance landscapes, and improving yard drainage—depend on reliable bulk supplies like gravel, sand, dirt, mulch, and stone that are sourced for the area’s geology and weather patterns. Choosing the right material gradation and quality up front reduces rework and helps projects perform as intended over time.

While I cannot speak to the actual service, I did enter my phone number to get a quote. I realized it was probably too much for my small project. But I received a very helpful follow up text conversation, and after I explained it was probably more than I needed, they still took time to help me work through how much I would need, and offered me possible solutions, even knowing I wouldn't be using their product. Makes me wish they had fit my needs, if that's the level of service they provided even to a non customers

Choose based on vehicle traffic, budget, drainage needs, and desired look. For driveways in Decatur's climate, pick a stable, well-draining aggregate and plan for proper depth and compaction (residential driveways commonly use 4-6 inches of material). Contact our team for guidance and use the material calculator to estimate quantities.
Cost varies by material type, order size, distance from the supplier, and site access. Hello Gravel shows transparent quotes during checkout, with a 3-ton minimum order and free delivery in many areas; request a quote to see exact pricing for your address and needs.
Materials that drain well and resist shifting tend to perform best in freeze-thaw cycles. Choose coarser, angular aggregates and ensure good base preparation, proper drainage, and compaction to reduce heaving and settlement over time.
Spring through early fall is the most flexible time for deliveries and installation because ground conditions are more stable. Plan ahead: standard delivery takes 2+ business days and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST, but weather and seasonal demand can affect timing.
Yes, Hello Gravel partners with local suppliers and haulers that serve Decatur and the surrounding West Indiana area. Availability depends on your zip code and supplier coverage, so check your zip code on our site or contact our team to confirm service to your address.
Pricing is influenced by the material type, tonnage, distance from the quarry or pit, site access, required truck size, and any special services like expedited delivery or tailgate spreading. Seasonal demand, permits, and difficult drop-off locations can also increase costs.
Match particle size and permeability to the drainage problem: larger, open-graded materials shed water faster and work well for channels and underdrains, while finer materials can help with slope stabilization when combined with erosion control fabric. Consider slope, runoff volume, and local soil type, and consult our team with site photos for tailored recommendations.
Many contractors handle hauling, grading, and spreading after delivery; others prefer delivered materials so they can schedule work efficiently. Hello Gravel delivers materials to your site, and drivers may offer tailgate spreading at their discretion, but you should confirm with your contractor what services they will provide.
Low-maintenance choices depend on the desired look, permeability, and weed control needs. Coarser aggregates generally provide better drainage and less compaction, while finer materials require more maintenance; consider a combination approach and local climate when selecting materials.
Permits and neighborhood or HOA rules can apply to major driveway changes, street blockages, or large deliveries placed in the right-of-way. Check city and county regulations and any HOA guidelines before ordering; if permits are required, arrange them before delivery to avoid delays or extra fees.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide on depth, then multiply to get cubic feet and convert to cubic yards or tons using our online calculator. If you prefer help, use Hello Gravel's material calculator or contact our team with your dimensions and project type for an estimate.
Clear a direct path for the truck, mark utilities and preferred drop-off points, remove obstacles, and ensure adequate turning and parking space for a tri-axle dump truck. Note any access restrictions in the Order Notes at checkout and confirm the delivery date so the driver can plan accordingly.
