Local Insights
Star is a small but active community of 7,000 residents, situated within a larger metro region of 2.6+ million people. A steady annual growth rate of 1.20% means more residential infill, renovations, and new landscaping projects—steady rather than explosive growth that translates into consistent demand for construction and landscape materials. Local climate figures—228 sunny days and 34.25 inches of rainfall each year, plus a hardiness zone of 8b—create a mix of needs: reliable drainage and erosion control where rainfall concentrates, durable base materials for driveways and pads that withstand frequent sun exposure, and soil and mulch choices that support longer growing seasons. For homeowners, that combination points to the importance of sourcing quality bulk materials—gravel, sand, topsoil, mulch, and base mixes—that match local conditions and installation goals, reducing rework and long-term maintenance.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Start with the job you need done: drainage, load-bearing, planting, or appearance. Gravel, sand, dirt, and stone each behave differently for drainage, compaction, and plant growth, so match the material to the function and local climate. Use our online material calculator and quiz or contact our team for help estimating quantities and suitability.
West Idaho experiences freeze/thaw cycles, snow, and heavy spring rains that affect compaction, drainage, and installation timing. Choose materials that handle local wetness and freeze-thaw movement, and avoid scheduling deliveries on days of heavy snow or when sites are saturated. Expect longer lead times and limited access in winter or immediately after storms.
Deliveries are typically made by tri-axle dump trucks using contracted haulers, so check driveway width, overhead clearance, and load-bearing capacity before ordering. Soft ground, steep grades, narrow gates, or long private lanes may require a shorter truck, offloading location, or additional fees. Contact our team with site details and photos so we can advise and coordinate a safe drop location.
Standard delivery is usually 2+ business days from order, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. During high demand seasons or after storms, lead times can be longer, so it helps to schedule early and confirm availability for your zip code. We will confirm timing once your local supplier and hauler accept the job.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion and if conditions allow, but spreading is not guaranteed. You can request spreading at checkout and the driver will assess whether it is safe and feasible on-site. For precise grading or large spreads, consider hiring a local installer or contractor.
Measure the area (length x width) and decide the depth you need, then use our online calculator to convert to tons or cubic yards for gravel, sand, dirt, and stone. Material weight can vary by type and moisture, so the calculator gives a solid starting point and our team can review larger or complex jobs. It is common to order 5-10% extra to account for compaction and settling.
Permit requirements vary by city, county, and homeowners association, especially for large fills, grading changes, or work in sensitive areas. Check with Star or Ada County planning and your HOA before ordering large volumes, and ask our team if you need documentation for delivery. We recommend confirming erosion control, set-back, and hauling rules ahead of time to avoid delays.
Prices vary by material type, quantity, delivery distance, and season, so local quotes provide the most accurate information. Hello Gravel offers transparent pricing and will show delivery fees and options at checkout; free delivery is available in many areas but not guaranteed for all locations. Maintenance needs depend on use and material choice: high-traffic driveways will compact and rut more quickly and may need periodic top-up and regrading, while decorative areas may need weed control and occasional replenishing. Consider long-term tasks like regrading after settling, removing fines that block drainage, and seasonal upkeep after snow or heavy rain when choosing a material. Selecting the right base, compaction, and drainage upfront reduces ongoing maintenance.
Smaller, straightforward projects can often be DIY if you have the right tools, a helper, and a plan for compaction and drainage. For larger areas, steep sites, or jobs that require precise grading, edging, or machinery, hiring a contractor speeds the job and helps avoid mistakes. If you are unsure, get a local contractor estimate and compare that to your time and equipment costs.
Customers often compare gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for drainage, load support, planting beds, and walkability. In general, more open-graded materials drain better and resist frost heave, finer materials are better for planting mixes or smoothing surfaces, and heavier crushed material provides a stronger base. Tell us the intended use and we will suggest suitable material types and installation tips for West Idaho conditions.
