Local Insights
Murtaugh is a small but active community with a population of 1,220, and it sits within a wider West Idaho metro area of 2.6+ million residents—an area seeing steady expansion at about 1.20% annually. That steady growth translates into consistent, local demand for residential and light commercial projects rather than a construction boom, so homeowners can expect ongoing need for reliable bulk materials over time as properties are updated and new infill projects move forward. With 228 sunny days a year and 34.25 inches of annual rainfall in a hardiness zone of 8b, local conditions favor materials that balance drainage and stability with resistance to sun-driven drying and moderate winter cycles. For Murtaugh homeowners, that means selecting aggregates, soils, mulches, and sands that support good drainage, reduce erosion, and tolerate seasonal moisture swings while also fitting the extended growing season and outdoor-use conditions.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners and contractors in Murtaugh commonly order a mix of gravel, sand, dirt, stone and similar aggregates. Each material serves different purposes—some are used for drainage and base layers, others for top dressing or planting beds—so choose based on how it will be used, compaction needs, and the look you want. Regional suppliers may vary in color and texture, so expect natural variation.
For Murtaugh’s climate, prioritize materials that compact well and resist erosion and frost movement; gravel, crushed stone and certain blended aggregates often perform well for driveways and drainage. Lighter, loose materials like loose sand or fine dirt may need stabilization or a geotextile base in frost-prone areas. Always consider seasonal freeze-thaw cycles and local supplier recommendations when choosing a mix.
Typical orders by project size: small projects (a garden bed or path) often need 1 to 5 cubic yards (about 1.5 to 7.5 tons), medium projects (a single-car driveway or modest backyard grading) need 6 to 15 cubic yards (roughly 9 to 22 tons), and large projects (multi-car driveways, full yard regrades) can require 16+ cubic yards (25+ tons). Use a material calculator or provide project dimensions to get a more exact estimate, and remember Hello Gravel’s minimum order is 3 tons.
Standard delivery is typically available in 2+ business days, and next-day delivery may be offered for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee. Deliveries are made by contracted dump truck fleets (usually tri-axle) and you can choose a preferred delivery date at checkout. We confirm details before dispatch, but exact timing can vary with local conditions and supplier availability.
Some drivers can perform tailgate spreading at their discretion, and you can request it at checkout, but spreading is not guaranteed and is subject to safety and truck capability. Fees for additional placement or spreading vary by supplier and job complexity, so request a quote or add notes to your order to discuss options with the delivery team. Hello Gravel will coordinate with local haulers to outline available services and any extra charges.
Compare materials based on use: base layers should be stable and well-draining, surface layers should match the desired appearance and maintenance level, and some mixes need periodic topping or compaction. Consider lifespan, how much upkeep you want, and budget—higher-performing aggregates often cost more upfront but reduce long-term maintenance. Use the material calculator and contact our team for guidance tailored to your project.
Plan for erosion by using well-graded materials and proper drainage channels; compacted base layers and edge restraints help reduce movement. To limit frost heave, use materials with good drainage and consider a deeper, compacted base or geotextile fabric in freeze-prone spots. For dust, finer materials can be stabilized with binders or periodic watering; discuss local climate impacts with suppliers when selecting a product.
Delivery distance depends on the local supplier network; many suppliers will travel from nearby towns in West Idaho, but availability can vary with season and haul distance. Hello Gravel’s minimum order is 3 tons, and some suppliers may have larger minimums or additional fees for long hauls. Check your zip code on our site and request a quote to see specific delivery reach and any extra charges.
Late spring through early fall is generally the easiest time to schedule deliveries and landscaping projects in Murtaugh because roads are dryer and suppliers have fuller schedules. Winter deliveries are possible but can be delayed by snow, frozen ground, or reduced hauling windows; plan extra lead time for cold-season work. Always pick a flexible delivery date and confirm before dispatch to avoid weather-related delays.
Because materials are regionally sourced, color and texture may vary from photos; this is normal for natural aggregates like gravel, sand, dirt, stone. If you need to change an order, contact our team as soon as possible—changes are easier before the order is processed or dispatched, and we will do our best to accommodate you. For concerns after delivery, contact customer service and review the refund and issue resolution process.
