Local Insights
Hana is a small community with a city population of 1,570 and sits within a larger metro area of 167,000. A steady growth rate of 0.50% annually suggests modest but consistent demand for home improvements, routine repairs, and occasional new construction rather than a sudden building boom. The local climate—about 260 sunny days a year and 60.00 inches of rainfall combined with a hardiness zone of 11a—supports year-round outdoor projects but also creates a need for materials that manage both heavy, episodic moisture and persistent sun exposure. For homeowners that means favoring bulk supplies that promote drainage and stability (for example, well-graded base materials and porous surfacing), as well as durable soil amendments and mulches that resist rapid breakdown in tropical conditions. Across landscaping and construction projects, reliable, locally sourced aggregates and soils help reduce callbacks and ensure installations perform under Hana’s specific climate.

Hello Gravel cared more about the structural integrity of my house than they did about making the sale. I was trying to place an order to buy dirt to place between a retaining wall and footings at the base of columns that hold up my house. They could have just sold me anything for profit, but they told me to go get the advice of a structural engineer, knowing that the structural engineer would probably order the dirt himself and possibly from another company. That’s integrity.

Homeowners and contractors in Hana commonly buy a range of bulk materials such as gravel, sand, dirt, and stone for driveways, pathways, drainage, and landscaping. These materials are used as base layers, surface cover, fill, and erosion control depending on the project. Because we source regionally, the texture and color of materials will reflect local geology.
Choose a material based on load, drainage, and desired look — for example use a stable base layer for vehicle traffic and a well-draining surface for areas with heavy rain. Consider compaction needs and whether the material will be covered by pavers or exposed as a finished surface. Use our material calculator or contact our sales team for guidance tailored to your project size and site conditions.
Hana's high rainfall and coastal conditions mean drainage and erosion resistance are key factors in material selection. Salt air can accelerate breakdown of some materials and heavy rains can cause movement, so choose well-draining mixes and properly compacted base layers. Expect regional variations in material performance and plan for periodic maintenance in exposed areas.
Standard delivery typically takes 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is available for orders placed before noon CST for an additional fee. Remote locations, narrow roads, steep driveways, and unpaved access can require longer lead times or special truck routing, and may incur access fees. Provide detailed access notes at checkout and our team will coordinate with the local hauler.
Yes. Hana’s rainy periods can delay delivery and make compaction and spreading difficult, so schedule heavy work during drier windows when possible. Wet conditions can increase tracking, rutting, and runoff, so allow extra time for site preparation and drying. For time-sensitive projects consider the next-day option and plan buffer days for weather.
Permit needs depend on the scope of your project, property location, and proximity to streams or coastal areas. Small gardening or minor driveway repairs often do not require permits, but major grading, retaining walls, or work in protected areas may. Check with Maui County planning and public works or speak with a local contractor to confirm permit requirements before ordering materials.
Local contractors source materials from nearby pits, quarries, and suppliers that reflect regional geology. Hello Gravel connects customers to these local suppliers and can arrange larger or recurring deliveries for contractors, often with wholesale pricing depending on volume and frequency. Contact our sales team to discuss bulk pricing and supplier options for your project.
Hello Gravel has a minimum order of 3 tons and deliveries are made by contracted dump truck fleets. Many areas offer free delivery on standard schedules, but remote or difficult-access addresses may have additional fees. We accept major credit cards, PayPal, and Apple Pay through our secure checkout.
Calculate cubic yards by multiplying length x width x depth (in feet) and dividing by 27. For example, a 20 ft by 10 ft driveway at 6 inches (0.5 ft) depth is 20 x 10 x 0.5 = 100 cubic feet, or about 3.7 cubic yards. Order an extra 5-10% for waste and compaction, and increase allowance for slopes or uneven ground.
Yes. Hana’s steep terrain and heavy rainfall increase the risk of erosion, so choose materials and installation methods that promote good drainage and slope stabilization. Avoid placing loose materials in stream channels or sensitive shoreline areas without permits and erosion controls. For projects on steep slopes consider geotextiles, retaining measures, or expert civil advice.
Contact our team as soon as possible if you need to change or cancel an order — modifications are easiest before the supplier and hauler begin processing. We will do our best to accommodate requests but changes depend on timing and local supplier schedules. If the truck is already dispatched, options can be limited, so reach out right away.
Because materials are regionally sourced, texture and color may vary from photos or samples. Take photos of the delivered material and the delivery area, then contact Hello Gravel customer service promptly so we can review the issue with the supplier. We will work to resolve the situation in line with our policies.
Drivers may be able to perform tailgate spreading at their discretion; request the service at checkout and the driver will assess if it can be done safely upon arrival. There is no guarantee of spreading, and drivers may decline if access, slope, or safety concerns exist. If spreading is essential, discuss it with our team ahead of delivery to set expectations.
Plan deliveries well in advance, confirm staging and access points, and communicate any load or truck-size restrictions to our scheduling team. Bundling loads or reserving recurring dates can improve reliability and may allow access to better pricing. Verify any required permits, access approvals, or offloading arrangements with local authorities before the first delivery.
