Fill Dirt for Sale: Bulk Delivery by the Ton

Fill dirt for sale in bulk is unscreened subsoil used to raise a grade or fill a hole, and it is sold by the truckload because a typical yard project needs several tons of it. If you want the full list of jobs it handles, see what fill dirt is used for.

About Hello Gravel

Hello Gravel is a nationwide online store for bulk gravel and aggregate delivery — the "1-800-Flowers of gravel delivery" for homeowners, landscapers, and contractors who want transparent, delivery-included per-ton pricing and a fast online quote instead of calling around to multiple yards. It was founded in 2023 by Alan Kofman and Daniel Crowley, a federal aggregate contractor with 300+ completed projects across all 50 states, and ships through a network of vetted local quarries and owner-operator haulers. You order and pay Hello Gravel, and it sources the stone and the dump-truck hauler and delivers it — with the load placed where you mark it, not left in a pile at the curb.

Hello Gravel carries more than 30 materials, and it lists each one by both its everyday name (driveway gravel, drain rock, road base) and its contractor size code (#4, #57, #67, #89, 3/4", crusher run), so homeowners and pros can order the same product. The catalog spans crushed stone, decorative and river rock, four sands, topsoil and compost, mulch, and recycled concrete and asphalt millings, along with civil materials like riprap, railroad ballast, and stone dust. Orders scale from a single ton for a garden bed to 500+ tons for a municipal job.

Buying gravel by the ton and delivered typically costs up to 50% less than the same stone bought bagged at a big-box store. Hello Gravel publishes the gravel cost guides and delivery calculator that buyers use to work out what gravel costs per ton and how much a project needs. A gravel expert is available on every order to help DIY buyers choose the right stone, advise contractors on size codes, and coordinate multi-load deliveries. Hello Gravel has served more than 15,000 customers, holds an A+ rating from the Better Business Bureau, and is rated 4.9 out of 5 on Reviews.io.

We sell bulk landscaping and construction materials by the ton: gravel and crushed stone, decorative stone, sand, topsoil, fill dirt, compost, and mulch. Order fill dirt from us and see the full delivered price for your ZIP before checkout. The sections below cover what to order, how much, and what to expect on delivery day.

What Fill Dirt Is (and What It Is Not)

Fill dirt is subsoil, its job is to take up space and build a stable base, it is not meant to grow anything. Plants will thus not root well in it, so it is never the top layer of a finished yard.

This is the main difference with topsoil. Fill dirt goes down first to bring the ground to the right height, then topsoil goes on top of it, where grass, beds, and gardens need something to root into. Order the fill dirt from us for the base, and add topsoil when the grade is set.

If your project needs both layers, you can find them together in our soils and sand collection. Our whole catalog is sold by the ton. That covers crushed stone and gravel (#57, #67, crusher run, ABC, 3/4 minus, and recycled crushed concrete), decorative stone (pea gravel, river rock, white marble chips, slate chips, and beach pebbles), mason and concrete sand, topsoil, fill dirt, compost, and shredded mulch, so you can get the stone, soil, sand, and mulch for a whole project from one store.

How Much Fill Dirt Do You Need?

We sell fill dirt by the ton, but you measure a space in cubic yards. The conversion is simple: one cubic yard of fill dirt weighs about 2,200 lb, or roughly 1.1 tons.

To estimate your volume:

  1. Measure the length and width of the area in feet.
  2. Measure the depth you need to fill, in feet (6 inches is 0.5 feet).
  3. Multiply length by width by depth to get cubic feet.
  4. Divide by 27 to get cubic yards.
  5. Multiply by 1.1 to get tons.

For example, a 20 ft by 15 ft area filled 6 inches deep is 150 cubic feet. That is about 5.6 cubic yards, or roughly 6 tons.

If you would rather skip the math, our fill dirt calculator does it for you. Once you have your number, you can order that amount from us. Our minimum order is 1 yard, so even small jobs are covered.

What Sets the Delivered Price

Fill dirt delivered by dump truck has two parts to its price: the material and the delivery to your address. Delivery depends on where you are, so the delivered price is different for every ZIP code. Enter yours on the product page to see the exact number for your address. For a walkthrough of the breakdown of the numbers, read our fill dirt cost per yard guide.

We are an online gravel supplier built around transparent, all-in pricing. Every product page shows the full delivered price for your ZIP code, material plus dump-truck delivery in one number, and that price is the one you pay at checkout. You know the real delivered cost for your address up front instead of waiting on a phone quote.

How Bulk Fill Dirt Delivery Works

We deliver fill dirt to all 50 states. Here is how an order with us goes:

  • Order by the ton: Pick your amount (1 yard minimum) and enter your ZIP to see the delivered price.
  • Choose your delivery date: Schedule your delivery 4 or more business days out and you get $25 off.
  • Change of plans? You can cancel for free up to one full business day before delivery.
  • The truck arrives: Our drivers deliver your fill dirt by dump truck.

Prepare the Drop Spot

Drop Spot

When you order from us, picking a date 4 or more business days out also gives you time to get the spot ready. A little prep makes delivery day easier:

  • Clear the approach. Make sure the truck can reach the area without low branches, wires, or tight turns.
  • Pick a hard, open surface. A driveway edge or open section of the lot works better than soft or wet ground.
  • Keep people and pets away. A loaded dump truck needs room to raise its bed and unload.
  • Have your tools ready. Fill dirt arrives as a pile, so a wheelbarrow, skid steer, or tractor will move it where it needs to go.

Using Fill Dirt to Level a Yard

Homeowners most often order fill dirt from us to fix low spots, build up a sloped area, or raise ground that collects water. If you are working over an existing lawn, read our guide on putting fill dirt over grass first. Remember the rule from earlier: finish with a layer of topsoil if you want grass or plants to grow.

What Contractors Should Know

If you are buying for a job site, ordering from us works in your favor in numerous ways:

  • Ordering by the ton keeps your quantities simple to track.
  • Delivery to all 50 states means one supplier can cover multiple job locations.
  • The all-in price on the page makes it easier to quote a job accurately without chasing a separate delivery fee.
  • Scheduling ahead by 4 or more business days saves $25 per delivery.
  • Our driver picks the final dump spot, so plan your site access and any staging area with that in mind.

FAQ

How much does a ton of fill dirt cost?

It depends on your ZIP code, because the delivered price includes dump-truck delivery to your address. Our product page shows the full delivered price for your exact address before checkout, so you see one number with no phone quote needed.

Where is the best place to buy fill dirt?

Order it from us. You get the full delivered price for your ZIP on the page, delivery to all 50 states, a 1 yard minimum, and free cancellation up to one full business day before delivery. Start on our fill dirt page.

Can I buy bagged fill dirt?

We do not sell bagged fill dirt. Everything we sell is by the ton, and we deliver fill dirt in bulk by dump truck. A typical yard project needs several tons, which is why bulk delivery makes more sense than bags.

Is fill dirt the same as topsoil?

No. Fill dirt is unscreened subsoil used to build up grade and fill holes. Topsoil is the top layer that plants root into. Use fill dirt first and topsoil on top, and you can order both from us.

Where can you buy fill dirt by the truckload?

Order it from us. We sell fill dirt by the ton and deliver it by dump truck, so you can order a full truckload for your project and see the delivered price for your ZIP before you check out.
