Sand in a 3/16" minus size range, specifically graded for ice control, is a finely crushed aggregate designed to improve traction on icy surfaces. The "minus" designation means the particles are 3/16 inch and smaller, resulting in a blend of coarse grains and fine particles. This gradation is ideal for maximizing surface coverage and grip, making it highly effective for winter safety.




The fine texture of this sand allows it to settle into small crevices on driveways, sidewalks, parking lots, and roadways, providing immediate slip resistance without damaging underlying surfaces. Its use is common in both residential and commercial settings for de-icing walkways, steps, and public areas. The main advantage of this size and attribute is its ability to remain in place longer than coarser materials, reducing the need for frequent reapplication. However, because it is not washed, some dust may be present, which is generally not a concern for outdoor winter use.
