Drainage Materials
Drainage Materials Drain Rock
Drain rock is washed, clean stone with the fines rinsed out and the pieces sized close to the same. Water moves through the gaps between the rocks instead of getting stuck, which is the whole point. Most drain rock runs between 3/4 inch and 1 1/2 inch. It can be angular crushed stone or rounded river gravel, depending on what your local quarry pulls.
The name tells you the job, not the rock. It's washed and single-sized so the voids stay open, and that's what makes it drain rock instead of just gravel. A yard weighs around 1.4 tons, so a pickup load usually tops out near a yard. Expect to pay a bit more than road base because of the extra washing step at the quarry.

What people use it for
How to choose within drainage materials drain rock
French drain
Washed 3/4" to 1" stone. Angular so it locks around the pipe, washed so it doesn't clog with fines.
