Decomposed Granite
Known for its natural look, this compact, durable material drains well and holds up in high-traffic areas. Made from crushed and weathered granite down to a mix of fine gravel and sand—best for patios, paths, driveways, and landscape projects. Can range in color from light brown and tan to reddish and gray, depending on the natural stone color in the region.
Road Base
(Class 5 | ABC | Crusher Run) A mixture of crushed limestone or granite, gravel, and sand, ranging from 1 ½” in size down to fines (small particles). Commonly used for constructing roads, driveway bases, parking lots, and other paved and unpaved surfaces. Intended to be compacted, hence the inclusion of fines within the material to provide support and be resistant to erosion and shifting.

Why Diablo Homeowners Choose Hello Gravel
Diablo's city population is 1,216, located in a larger metro area with a population of 2.5+ million. The community is experiencing steady, measured growth at a rate of 0.40% annually, and benefits from a temperate local climate with 228 sunny days per year and an annual rainfall of 35.51 inches in hardiness zone 8b. Those conditions drive routine outdoor projects—driveway repairs, garden refreshes, drainage upgrades, and small additions to yards—so homeowners often look for reliable, local aggregates. Quality gravel helps control erosion, improve drainage, and create usable outdoor surfaces that stand up to local sun and seasonal rains, which is why selecting the right type matters for long-lasting results. Gravel choices for Diablo should reflect the balance of sun and seasonal moisture: angular crushed material offers good permeability and stays in place on slopes, while rounded gravel can provide a softer walking surface for paths and patios. Because local soils and rainfall patterns influence settling and compaction, homeowners benefit from regionally sourced gravel that matches those conditions. Hello Gravel connects Diablo homeowners to trusted local suppliers and haulers, simplifying ordering, providing material guidance, and coordinating delivery so projects get the right gravel at the right time with minimal hassle.Popular Projects in Diablo This Season

Frequently Asked Questions - Diablo gravel Delivery
Everything you need to know about gravel delivery in Diablo.
Locally sourced gravel in Diablo typically includes pea gravel (small, rounded stones), 3/4" crushed stone (angular, good for compaction), washed gravel (clean, good for drainage), and decomposed granite (fine, compactable). Colors and texture vary because materials are regionally sourced, so expect tan, gray, and brown tones that reflect Contra Costa geology. If you have a color preference, add it to Order Notes at checkout.
Typical delivered prices in Diablo vary by material and supplier; expect a rough range of $30 to $70 per ton for common gravels, and about $300 to $900 per tri-axle truckload depending on load size (tri-axle trucks usually carry roughly 10-12 tons). Final price depends on gravel type, color, distance, site access, and any fees for next-day delivery or special services. Hello Gravel requires a 3-ton minimum order and will show an exact price for your zip code at checkout.
For driveways use angular crushed stone (commonly 3/4" minus or 3/4" topcoat) for strength and interlock; add a crusher-run base for stability. For patios and patios with seating, decomposed granite or a compactable fines mix gives a finished look; for walkways and garden paths, pea gravel or washed 3/8"-1/2" gravel are comfortable underfoot and drain well. Consider local winter rains and wildfire risk when choosing color and how close material sits to structures.
A simple rule: tons = area (sq ft) * depth (in inches) * 0.00417, which assumes typical crushed stone density. Examples: a 200 sq ft area needs about 0.83 ton at 1", 1.67 tons at 2", and 2.5 tons at 3". Because of compaction, waste, and regional density variation, round up 10-15% and use our online calculator for a precise quote.
Use angular, larger-aggregate mixes like 1"–2" crushed rock or riprap for steep, erosion-prone slopes; these resist movement better than rounded gravels. Combine gravel with geotextile fabric and, where possible, check dams, terraces, or native plantings to slow runoff. For significant slopes or drainage channels consult a civil engineer or local supplier for recommended BMPs and materials.
Hello Gravel partners with local Contra Costa suppliers and haulers that deliver to Diablo; typical delivery is by contracted dump trucks (tri-axle is common). Tri-axle trucks usually carry about 10-12 tons; some end-dumps and smaller trucks carry 6-8 tons. Our minimum order is 3 tons, standard delivery is 2+ business days, and next-day delivery is sometimes available for orders placed before noon CST for an extra fee.
Rules vary: many HOAs and Contra Costa County planning departments have design, drainage, and impervious-surface rules that could apply to switching turf to gravel or installing a driveway. Check your HOA guidelines first and contact Contra Costa County or your municipal planning office for permit and stormwater requirements before you start. If you’re uncertain, request documentation or a site review from your local planning department.
A well-installed gravel driveway in Diablo can function for 10-20 years with periodic maintenance. Expect to regrade and refill low spots every 1-3 years after heavy rains, and add a topping layer every 3-7 years depending on traffic. Keep an eye on erosion after winter storms, control weeds annually, and consider a stabilizing base material if you want to reduce maintenance.
Gravel is generally the lowest up-front cost and provides excellent drainage, making it well suited to Diablo’s dry summers and winter rains, but it requires more regular upkeep. Asphalt and concrete last longer with lower routine maintenance but are more expensive and reduce permeability. Decomposed granite offers a natural look and is good for drought-tolerant landscaping but can erode on slopes and needs edging or stabilizers for high-traffic areas.
Use coarse, washed gravel or 3/4" crushed stone over a graded, compacted base to break up surface flow on clay soils, and install perforated drain pipe where necessary. For drought-tolerant beds, pair a layer of gravel mulch with drip irrigation and native, low-water plants; decomposed granite also works for paths and patios when compacted and paired with edging. Always consider a geotextile separator to limit mixing of clay with the gravel and improve long-term drainage.
Gravel can help create defensible space because it is noncombustible and reduces flammable vegetation immediately next to structures, but it is only one piece of a defensible-space plan. Keep a clear zone free of combustible mulch and address ember-prone features like wooden decks and vents; follow Contra Costa County and Cal Fire recommendations for setbacks and vegetation management. If you want help planning gravel placement for wildfire protection, ask suppliers about recommended clearances and noncombustible surfacing near structures.
